 Holy Scripture by John Murray

Topic: Scripture
Description: All Scripture is God's mouth, his living voice; Scripture is as if we heard God speaking from heaven in an audible voice, but is more certain because it is a permanent deposit available to all; Scripture addresses three of the most important things in our lives: truth, error and right; Scripture corrects, because it is for our redemption; those who think biblical doctrine is cold and dead are themselves dead; if we are not interested in God's will for us, we are godless; if preaching is not negative, it is not the gospel, which is against evil and wrong; we must be alert to resist wrong; many would appeal to the happiness of children rather than to what is right, but Paul based his exhortation to children on a consideration of what is right; the only happiness worthy of the name is the fruit of righteousness; the man of God is one who lives for God; Scripture is sufficient to guide us in any situation we face.

Hope For the Godly In Death by John Murray

Topic: Death
Description: Death is an abnormality because it was not the lot of man as he was created, it is an evil because it is the wages of sin, it brings sadness because it separates us from our loved ones, and it is mysterious because we know so little about the unseen beyond; there is not one ray of hope to illumine the darkness of unbelievers, because there is absolutely no comfort that can be given to the unbeliever in death; it is unscriptural to say that there should be no mourning at the death of believers, because there is an abnormality there, but there are five truths which inject hope into the death of the godly; 1) the sting has been taken out of death for the godly, because they have been delivered from sin's guilt and power; 2) the righteous sleep through Jesus; 3) the godly at death go to be with Christ in His exalted glory; 4) the godly will be glorified with Christ at the resurrection; 5) the godly will always be with the Lord.

Humility in the Church by John Murray

Topic: Humility
Description: Paul distinguishes various gifts present in the church; humility is the paramount virtue in regard to the use of our gifts; we become absorbed in our gifts and consider ourselves more important than others; there is danger of being puffed up, self-assertive and overbearing; it is inconceivable for the eye to boast itself against the ear; we should recognize our mutual interdependence; men in church office are particularly liable to pride, and its extreme development is seen in the claims of the Roman Pope; the other vice in regard to gifts is a lack of sobriety, by underestimating what God has given us; this is a false modesty which draws back from discharging our service to the church; we are not to avoid the responsibility God has laid on us; God has not appointed women to office in the church, but they have other functions in the church; if an organ of the human body is not exercised it atrophies; there is affliction in Christ's body when one does not exercise his gift.

Justification by Faith by John Murray

Topic: Justification
Description: The gospel is God's omnipotence to extricate men from the tangle of sin; the gospel message is divine omnipotence because it is God's Word; righteousness as well as omnipotence is needed because of man's sin; this righteousness is not an attribute of God, but is applied to believers for their acceptance with God; this God-righteousness which believers possess has divine quality; it is more than human perfection, because it is righteousness performed by Christ a divine person; in contrast the Roman church teaches justification based on our human righteousness; God-righteousness is received by faith, and that points to our responsibility; this righteousness of divine quality becomes ours by self-abandonment in faith which rests on God; true faith does not look within, but goes out and is preoccupied with the divinity of the God-righteousness; righteousness by faith is a stumblingblock because the human heart is preoccupied with itself; we are entirely debtors to God's free grace.

Justification: A Full Slate by John Murray

Topic: Justification
Description: The fundamental error respecting religion is to claim acceptance with God by what we are or do; nothing is more characteristic of us by nature than to think that way; living an outwardly decent life and being a member of the church are a matter of what we are or do, and cannot bring us acceptance with God; 1) The first thing the truly blessed man thinks of is that he deserves God's damnation because of his sin; 2) the blessed man is not only conscious of his sin, but has pled for God's gracious forgiveness. 3) The blessed man trusts in a free justification; justification is much more than forgiveness, because it is more than blotting out debt and giving us a clean slate; justification means acceptance with God, giving us a positive credit, a full slate, found in the righteous obedience of Christ laid to our account.
