Scripture(s): Roman 8:9 | | Description: This passage in Romans is often misinterpretted by many in the church today, to mean that to recieved the gift of the Spirit is the same as being filled with the Spirit, which it is not. Pastor Maxwell shows how in many cases in the scriptures the filling of the Holy Spirit was subsequent to the recieving of the Spirit. He shows that the prescence of the Spirit is not the smae as the presiding of the Spirit, this is how the Holy Spirit can be present in us but we are not allowing Him to rule over over us.

Residing vs presiding

Maxwell stresses that we need time and preparation for being filled completely. Unless we have become broken up and fallow ground, we won't be ready. 1 John 1:3 doesn't say we have fellowship with the Spirit but with the Father and the Son. This was purposeful to help us avoid introspection. Romans 8:2 speaks of the law of the Spirit gives us freedom from sin and death. Regeneration is sanctification begun. The Spirit helps us become sons of God. The Spirit is for all who are Christians. Receiving the Spirit is not the same as being filled of God (residing if different from presiding or being in charge). There doesn't need to be a gap between the two but for many there is. Why are we to be filled? It shouldn't be for success. It should be for Christlikeness.
