| | Great Awakenings in American History Part 2 by J. Edwin Orr
Topic: Revival History | | Description: This special series was delivered at Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena, California in January of 1976. Orr gives a very informative overview of the beginnings of the third great awakening in American history (which is largely overlooked), starting around 1830, and went on for 12 years. He recounted the events preceding Charles Finney's famous revival in Rochester, New York, in that same year. He explained how 100,000 people were saved as a result of that revival when the town only had a population of 10,000. Orr also defused how false reports of people barking took place on the Frontier, and recounted how greatly the Hawaiian Islands were affected.

| | Great Awakenings in American History Part 4 by J. Edwin Orr
Topic: Revival History | | Description: This special series was delivered at Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena, California in January of 1976. Orr speaks about the enthusiasm of the church at the turn of the 20th century to make it the "Christian Century." He details the events that brought about the revival in Wales in 1904 and its unofficial leader Evan Roberts, including many fascinating details of packed churches, declining crime in society, so much so that the police had to take up singing in quartets. From there he speaks of revivals that it spawned in China, Korea and the great Pentecostal outpouring at Azusa Street in 1906.

| | Great Awakenings in American History Part 3 by J. Edwin Orr
Topic: Revival History | | Description: This special series was delivered at Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena, California in January of 1976. Orr speaks on the awakening that started in 1857 with a prayer meeting in New York City with one man and ended up with the whole city packed out with prayer meetings in churches and auditoriums. It spread all over the nation, so glorious that D.L. Moody said at the end of his life (1899) that we wished to see that happen again in the Church. Orr relates how this awakening and conversions spread to Ireland and South Africa. He recounts an interesting event with Andrew Murray trying to bring order to a prayer meeting! Out of this revival came D. L. Moody, William Booth, Charles Spurgeon and others. The main theme is how through prayer people encountered the presence of the Lord. "In times of revival, sinners come running to the Lord," Orr said. Indeed they did!

| | The Awakening of 1792 Onward by J. Edwin Orr
Topic: Revival History | | Description: Preached at the Church on the Way in Van Nuys. Orr describes the "unparallelled moral slump" that preceded the Second Great Awakening starting in 1792, so bad that churches were in fear that Christianity might be wiped out. Jonathan Edwards and others called for "extraordinary prayer." A union of churches began praying, with Boston seeing the beginnings of revival in 1792 and general national revival by 1798. James McGrady asked his congregants to pray for him in 1799, and showers of blessing came in 1800 on the Kentucky frontier. Out of this revival missionary societies began and colleges became training centers for young pastors and missionaries.

| | The Awakening of 1859 in Britain and Elsewhere by J. Edwin Orr
Topic: Revival History | | Description: Preached at the Church on the Way in Van Nuys. In this relatively short sermon, Orr explains how the revival in America caught fire starting in Ireland, and its effects even surpassing that in America. Sinners were violently prostrated in what they called at that time "slain in the Spirit." He chronicled how prayer meetings mushroomed all over Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England, and literally hundreds of thousands converted to Christ. The fires of revival spread to the Scandanvian countries, Germany (which had 30 years of it) and the greatest outpourings ever to occur in Australia and South Africa.

| | The Awakening of 1727 Onward by J. Edwin Orr
Topic: Revival History | | Description: Preached at the Church on the Way in Van Nuys. Orr sets out on part 1 of describing what is known in America as "The Great Awakening" and its equivalent in Britain starting in 1727 with on fire Moravians. The conditions in the world at that time that preceeded the awakening were deplorable and rotten--the gambling, drinking, slave trade, etc. as well as the once powerful Baptists, Congregationalists and Puritans that had lost their spirituality and power. John Wesley, George Whitfield and Jonathan Edwards came into prominence around 1738 and Orr, in his typical fashion, paints a colorful description of what God was powerfully doing through these men of God.

| | The Awakening of 1858 in America by J. Edwin Orr
Topic: Revival History | | Description: Preached at the Church on the Way in Van Nuys. This great revival was termed "the event of the century" and in Orr's opinion one of the most cooperative periods in American history where the denominations acted as "one man". It was spectacularly noted for extradordinary conversions and calls to service. What led to this great awakening was a laymen's movement among churches for united prayer for God's outpouring of the Spirit. Orr noted some interesting movements among the slaves and armies in the Civil War and the continued effects up until the death of Moody in 1899.
