GOD created the heavens and the earth, in the beginning. He made every-thing. He made the birds with their brilliant plumage. He made the flowers with their fragrant blossoms. He made a perfect world, and happiness reigned. There was no sin, no sickness, no suffering, and no death. It was not until the serpent, the devil in disguise, came to the garden that sin entered the world. It was not until then that sickness came upon the body of man. Sickness is a direct result of sin. Throughout the Scriptures, we find that sickness is caused by sin.
Sickness is not always the result of sin committed by the individual. A person may be sick, not because of sin in his own life, but because sin is in the world. A sister comes to me, and tells me she is sick. She feels it is the result of sin, but she does not know what she has committed. She looks back in her life, and fails to see anything wrong. Yes, many suffer sickness as the result of sinful pursuits in their own lives, but there are other cases where sickness cannot be traced to personal sinful acts. Many faithful saints, who have served the Lord for years, are sick. This often becomes a spiritual hindrance when the devil points to it and says that it is the result of your own sin. It might be and it might not be. Sickness is abroad in the world. It will fasten itself upon a baby; in which case the baby is not to blame, for sin is not imputed where there is no law. Of course, the devil will make you try to believe that, in every case of sickness, you are to blame.
Now, My Friends, there is nothing you can do to bring about a healing. No amount of money will buy it for you. Your agonizing, lashing and scourging for penance will be of no avail. There are many people who are unhappy because healing would not come, as they have anticipated, through physical and spiritual penalizing.
When a sinner comes to the altar and asks for salvation, we KNOW that the Lord will give it to him. Jesus has already paid for it. When the Lamb of God hung upon the tree and died there, His death was an atonement for your sins and my sins and the sins of the whole world. As far as God is concerned, your debt was paid in full when His only begotten Son was sacrificed on Calvary. But you are saved only as you appropriate that sacrifice; only as you believe that He died for you. “He writes the pardon on my heart the moment I believe.” As soon as he takes Jesus as his Saviour, that moment that man is saved, and Jesus becomes that man’s Saviour. That moment, his sins are washed away, and his name is written in the Book of Life. The promise is unto
you.
But it is the act of faith on your part that makes you a Christian. You must act. You have a part to do. Your salvation does not depend upon any action that Jesus has yet to take. He has already done His part, when He suffered, bled and died upon Calvary’s Cross. The reason that we were not Christians ten years before our conversion is not because Jesus would not save us then. It is because we did not want Him at that time. We could have been saved any time after He was made a propitiation for our sins. As far as Jesus is concerned, He gladly offers salvation to every man, woman and child. “Whosoever will, may come.” Nobody is left outside of this all-inclusive invitation. He said, “Whosoever.” Hallelujah. The reason we are preaching is not to persuade Christ to save men. We preach to persuade men to accept Jesus Christ. Preaching is the art of telling the Story of the Cross--the art of persuading men and women so that they would believe His promises and receive Him. Praise the Lord.
Conversion means a transformation of life. It means becoming a new creature in Christ Jesus. And Jesus Christ does the work. That work is made possible by His sacrifice on Calvary. Conversion is not mentally believing, or mentally grasping the truth of regeneration. Conversion is not changing the mind. Conversion is getting a new heart, out of which are the issues of life. When a man is converted, you will note a difference in his eyes, in his talk, in his walk, in his conduct. Organic changes occur in his body, for his desires are different; his evil appetites are broken; his unholy passions are under control; the power of sin is snapped in twain.
Conversion is brought about by two acts: Jesus shedding His precious Blood on Calvary; man appropriating the atonement made possible by that sacrifice. God’s acceptance is contingent and dependent on man’s attitude toward God—-not God’s attitude toward man. God’s attitude does not change. God’s attitude is always the same.
Take a dope fiend who knows nothing about salvation. You tell him that Jesus loves him. Tell him that Jesus died for him. Tell him that Jesus wants to save him. This is all true, but Jesus is powerless to save that man until he is willing to accept Jesus. There is something that man must do before the grace of God can avail for him. The Grace of God will avail for him! It is a miracle! There is no greater miracle than that! But it is contingent and dependent upon his willingness to accept the proffered pardon. But the only way that it can be brought about is by an act of faith on the part of that man.
Sometimes, we have heard this from altar workers. (I say this merely as a statement of fact, and not critically.) “Lord, save him now. O, Jesus, save this man. Oh, won’t You save him now.” But Jesus cannot do it. He has already done what
He could to save that man. He can do nothing for him until he says, “Lord, I believe,” and appropriates salvation by faith. In a moment, he begins to pray. Then he believes, and, in that moment, Jesus comes into that man’s heart, accepts him, and makes him a new creature. And this is not a product of the man’s efforts. It is not the culmination of mental concentration. It is not the issue of a conglomeration of composite ideas he may have upon the subject. It is not the result of study. Jesus made the change, but Jesus could not make the change until his will was surrendered and Jesus was allowed to enter his heart.
Our work is to persuade man to believe on Jesus--to persuade him to accept God. We should tell him the Story of Calvary; how Jesus loved him enough to die for him; how the blood atones for his sins. We should tell him that there is no salvation outside of Jesus Christ. But he says, “I am such a sinner. I am a slave to dope.” “Yes, but Jesus will wash all your sins, and He will set you free from dope.” “Why doesn’t He do it?” “He will. He wants to. He has a part to play. But you have a part to play too. You have power of volition. You have the privilege of choosing. You know right and wrong, and you can choose right or wrong. Now just forget about your sins, your dope and your weakness. You can pray until you are black and blue. You can struggle yourself into a frenzy. But you will never be delivered until you get Jesus to do it.”
Suddenly that man begins praying. He takes his eyes from his sins, and looks to the Lamb of God. IN JESUS, he sees victory over the power of sin. He believes in JESUS NOW, and takes Him as his Saviour. And Jesus comes into that man’s heart, and salvation is become his portion. Yes, that is the only way salvation comes. We are justified through faith in Him. We are not saved according to our good works, for salvation is the gift of God to those who believe. Neither can we find salvation through the observance of penance. Martin Luther was climbing up the steps on his knees, when it dawned upon his consciousness that “the just shall live by faith.” This justification by faith comes through the death of Jesus. Every blood drop that trickled down His wounded brow, His pierced side and hands and feet was a part of the price Jesus paid in washing away your sins and mine. He wants to save you and redeem you, but He can’t do it unless you believe in His Name, and take Him as your Saviour. It is Jesus Who solves your problems. It is Jesus Who breaks your awful habits. It is Jesus Who cancels the power of sin. You don’t do it. You can’t do it. He does it, when you let Him do it. Hallelujah. He does it, because you let Him do it. That is the central philosophy of justification by faith through the Son of God.
In the eleventh chapter of the first epistle of Paul to the Corinthians, we read “For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which He was betrayed took bread: and when he had given
thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is My body, which is broken for you.” I know this kind of Gospel arouses antagonism. But it is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Yes, My Brother and My Sister, divine healing is an integral part of the atonement. Divine healing is the heritage of every Christian. It is an inheritance promised to you, if you are following Him as a Saviour. “For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you. I have already told you the meaning of Calvary and the Cross. Shame on you for going astray so soon,” says the venerable apostle. Paul straightened them out on the doctrine that should have been clear and understood by them. Jesus took bread and said. “Take, eat: this is My body, which is broken for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” The Great Physician speaks Hallelujah to His name. His body was broken that our bodies might be made whole. His broken body amends our sick bodies just as His shed blood cleanses our sinful souls.
“Well, Mr. Price, have you any corroborative statement to support such a claim?” somebody asks. In Isaiah, when the prophet was foretelling coming events in the life of our Lord, His passion and death, we read that “He was wounded for our transgressions: He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; AND WITH HIS STRIPES, WE ARE HEALED.” We are healed with His stripes. We have a rightful claim to healing, as sons of God and brothers of Jesus Christ. When we seek healing, we are not asking God for a special favor; we are not seeking a special blessing; we are not imploring for a special benediction; we are not begging for a supplementary work of grace. No, not at all: We are merely claiming an inheritance provided in the Will of the Saviour and made possible and available through the suffering and death of our blessed Lord. Glory be to Jesus. Matthew, in the sixteenth and seventeenth verses of the eighth chapter, gives us corroborative evidence. The Apostle shows us that, with His stripes, not sinful souls but sick bodies were healed. Isaiah did not mean spiritual healing. He meant physical healing. We read, “When the even was come, they brought unto Him many that were possessed with devils: and He cast out the spirits with His Word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.” Yes. My Brother, yes! My Sister, in the atonement is cleansing for your soul and healing for your body. Do you need a saviour? Jesus is the Saviour. Do you need a great physician? Jesus is the Great Physician. You have the promise that God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. This promise finds its fulfillment in the suffering and death of Jesus, which is the atonement. Come--ask for your healing--it belongs to you. It is the property of everyone who is a joint-heir with Christ.
But the sinner cannot claim healing. The infidel, the unregenerate, the
unsaved, is not entitled to this provision, or any provision, in the atonement, except he finds salvation in the atonement. There is no healing promised to the unbeliever. The sinner who expects healing will be as badly disappointed as the sinner who expects to get to heaven without being born again. He can’t do it. It can’t be done for him. Healing is for the children of God; it is their bread. Healing is a part of the atonement for those who have a part in the atonement. Accept the atonement and receive your healing. The atonement is your certificate of healing.
“After the same manner also, He took the cup, when He had supped, saying, this cup is the New Testament in My blood. This do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of Me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death TILL HE COME. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.” Do not partake of the elements as if they were merely bread and wine. When you gather about the table, think of what the broken bread represents. Think of what the wine typifies. Think of what the elements symbolize. Think of their significance. That’s what Jesus is talking about. “Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.” For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself (judgment standing against himself), not discerning the Lord’s body, not understanding the meaning of the wine and the broken bread. “For this cause, many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.” For this cause! What cause? Because you don’t discern the Lord’s body. Because you don’t realize what the broken bread represents. Because of this, many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. If words mean anything at all, that says many are prematurely dead. Yes, My Brother and Sister, His broken Body is for your healing, even as His shed Blood is for your cleansing. “Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.”
“But is it God’s will for me to be healed?” another asks. “I have a tumor; I have a cancer. I would like to be prayed for. I want to get healed, if it is God’s will.” My Brother, God is just as willing to heal you, as He is to save you. Was He willing to save you? Of course He was. He is “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” Then He is just as willing to heal your body. Jesus says He came to do the will of Him that sent Him. Then whatever He did was according to the will of the Father. And we find Jesus going “about all Galilee, teaching in the synagogues, and preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.” Yes, My Sister, God wants you to have a healthy body, unmarred by tumors and un-racked with pains, because He wants His children to be happy in the service of the
King.
“Am I healed, when I still see symptoms of the disease, and I don’t feel well?” This is the question that comes to many who do not receive instant healing. Here is where the fact of faith is made manifest. You see no difference; you feel no difference. Yet you are to believe yourself different. You are to believe yourself well, in spite of evidences to the contrary. That is believing! “Faith is the substance of things HOPED FOR, the evidence of things NOT SEEN.” “We walk by faith, not by sight.” Neither are we to consider feeling first. Faith also precedes feeling. “What things so-ever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” Believe first; feel afterwards. Getting healed is like getting saved. No man can feel he is saved until he is saved, but he is saved by believing not by feeling.
In passing, I want to say that no man can possess salvation without knowing it. I have dealt with thousands of people. I presume I have come in contact with as many different church people as any other evangelist. And the Lord has given me an open door of ministry, especially in Canada. I have always claimed that the Lord has given me Canada. I love the dear people up there. I hold a meeting in Canada, and people come. They enjoy the meetings. After some ten days or so of meetings, people come to me and ask: “Can you really KNOW you are saved?” I have been asked this question a thousand times. “Can you really know? I have thought I was saved, but I don’t know.” They were just sort of trusting Jesus, but not completely trusting. Their confidence in Him was saturated with doubt. Sometimes there is more doubt than trust. After their souls are stirred, they are not quite sure that they are saved. In answer to the question, I have often said, “You are not saved.” You cannot be saved and not know it. You can have the blessed assurance that Jesus is yours. Yes, you can know if you are born the second time, the same as you know you have been born the first time. Real salvation makes you a new creature. You will know it. Your neighbors will know it. It has been my blessed privilege to give the altar call for professed Christians who wanted to have a knowledge that the great transaction is done. And I have heard the shouts of joy, as the miracle of regeneration became a fact and a factor in their lives.
Yes, My Sister, it is His will to save you and to heal you, because your healing has been provided for according to the Word of God. God had incorporated it in His plan of redemption. Isaiah saw it when he turned his prophetic telescope down the vista of the ages. Jesus was conscious of it, as they led Him out of the judgment hall of Pontius Pilate to the whipping post. Oriental fashion, they tied His Hands behind His Back, and bound Him to the post. A Roman soldier lashed His unprotected back until His precious Body was broken by the force of the cruel blows. He suffered excruciating pain—
pain that was multiplied infinitely in intensity because Jesus was enduring there the suffering of the whole world. The Roman soldier plucked His Beard, spat upon His Face, and led Him away to be crucified. “This is My Body, which is broken for you. Because you do not discern it, many are weak and sickly among you, and many have gone to premature graves.” Your healing is included in the atonement. The devil should have no dominion over your body.
They whipped Him, and nailed Him to the cross. They pierced Him, and the blood flowed down His wounded Side. That precious Blood was the purchase price of your soul’s redemption. For a moment, let us go back to the Passover. The children of Israel were instructed to slay a perfect lamb. They were to take the blood, and, with hyssop, strike it upon the lintel and the two side posts of the door. Every home thus marked would be passed over by the avenging angel, and the first-born of the home would be spared. In fancy, I have followed that avenging angel through the streets of Egypt, looking for blood. He would throw his lantern light upon every door. Where there was no blood, he went in to slay the first-born. Where there was blood, he passed over. “When I see the blood, I will pass over you.” The Lord said to take a lamb without blemish, and slay it. Catch the blood in a basin. Then take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood, and strike the lintel and the side posts of the door. “When I see the blood, I will pass over you.” Jesus was celebrating the Passover at the Last Supper. He told His Disciples to keep on celebrating it on this side of the cross. The reason He told them to do this, is because He wanted His Church to keep it in remembrance of Him. Now, there is no virtue in the substance themselves. I don’t believe in transubstantiation. The elements remain the same before and after consecration. There is no change whatsoever: neither in the taste nor in the texture. The only thing altered in regard to the elements, is their significance. The bread is no longer eaten to satisfy the hunger; neither is the wine taken to quench the thirst. But we per-take of the bread and the wine for a wholly different purpose. We do it in remembrance of Him.
In celebrating the Passover, Jesus wanted to place before the eyes of the Church, two great truths. One is in the shed Blood. “Never forget that without shedding of blood is no remission of in. You are going into an unbelieving world. You will have to contend with skepticism and incredulity. But remember the Blood. When you drink the wine, let it remind you of the Blood. Let it take you through Gethsemane. Let it remind you of the whipping post. Let it carry you to Calvary. My shed Blood cleanseth you from all sins.”
The other truth that Jesus wanted the Church to remember is in the broken Body. On the Passover evening, the children of Israel were told to slay a lamb. The blood was sprinkled upon the lintel and the side posts of the door.
But they were to eat the lamb. The blood was to save them from the destroying
angel. The body of the lamb was to provide them strength for the journey. This is a perfect type of the Lamb that was later to be slain for the sins of the whole world. His shed Blood provides salvation for the lost soul. His broken Body provides healing for the sick body. If healing is not in the atonement, I say that it is the only case in the entire Scriptures where the antitype is not true to type.
Now then, My Brother, My Sister, have you given your heart to Jesus? Do you love Him? Are you fully yielded to Him? If such is the case, healing belongs to you. He purchased it with His own Body. He suffered and died for it. He endured untold sufferings, and He did not endure them in vain.
“But how can I get it?” This is the cry of many. Brother, you get it in exactly the same way that you got your salvation. You saw salvation in the atonement, and you appropriated it by faith. Can you see healing in the atonement? Will you appropriate it by faith? “According to your faith, be it unto you.” To the extent that you take Him at His Word, to that extent you will be healed. The extent of your healing is measured by the amount of your faith. I say unto you, there is not a sickness or a disease in this building tonight but will go, if you only believe! There is not a tumor, a cancer, a cripple, a blind or a paralytic case but what will be instantly healed, if you only believe? Oh, I know what some of you are thinking. “Don’t go too far, Mr. Price!” That’s what you are saying in your mind. But, Friend, do you believe God? Do you believe His Word? That’s the trouble with us. Unbelief! The devil says, “It cannot be. It is impossible.” Get thee behind me, Satan. I see it in the atonement. I discern it in the broken Body of Jesus! Ah, when your faith gets to that place, you will get healed.
“Why don’t we get healed instantly?” we are often asked. We repeat, “According to your faith, be it unto you.” Faith is that wonderful instrument which measures the extent, and gauges the time of healing. Imperfect faith is restricted to certain, minor ailments. Its effect is gradual. Perfect faith comprehends every known and unknown disease and sickness. Its effect is instantaneous. If you are looking for instant healing, you can have it. If you are looking for gradual healing, you will get it. Our great difficulty in this matter lies in the fact that the churches are antagonistic toward this gracious beneficence of a loving God. Now, if I were to preach salvation only, I would find no opposition. I could have twenty churches in front of me and a double row of preachers behind me. They told me so. But God, helping me, I am going to preach healing, even if I have to stand on a soap box in an alley. And I know that God will see me through somehow. Why is it that some of you don’t get instant healing? It is because doubt is mixed in with your faith. That particle of doubt acts as a brake. That’s why you recover gradually. As you believe, healing progresses, as you doubt, progress ceases. You don’t wonder if Jesus can save you. Why wonder if Jesus can heal you. Well, we know so many
preachers who don’t believe in it; our church does not teach it; so is it any wonder that doubt has come to be a part of our nature. Oh, it is a hard task! It is difficult to get people to believe the Word of God just because it does not coincide with the opinion of some man. That’s why special spiritual preparation has become necessary.
The other day, I anointed a sister for cancer. Her hands went up. Tears rolled down her cheeks. She cried, “Glory! It is done.” It was a big cancer. It is going down; I saw it today. Her heart was going just like a trip-hammer. Here’s a box of morphine. She is through with it. No more pain. Jesus bore it all on the whipping post. He has promised all this, if you will only believe. If you only believe and trust, your own cancer will melt away too. I would not dare to say this if I did not believe it. He has provided healing for your body. And it is yours for the taking. I believe that healing for the body is an integral part of the atonement. The Word teaches it. And experience proves it! Hallelujah!
“But how am I going to keep my healing?” Get out of your thinking: ‘‘. . . if it be His will.” It is His will.
“BUT HOW CAN I KEEP MY HEALING?” You can keep your healing in exactly the same way that you first received it. There was nothing that you could do to receive it. So now that you have it, there is nothing you can do to keep it. You received it merely by believing that by His Stripes, you are healed. So now you can keep it simply by keeping on believing that by His Stripes you are healed. I know that the devil is going after you. He will tell you that there is nothing to it. That’s what he tells anyone who comes to God. Oh, yes, I believe in a personal devil. I venture to say that, if a drunkard got salvation here tonight, there would be a dozen bootleggers waiting for him outside. They would tell him that there was nothing to his salvation! It is just an attitude of the mind, simply the natural result of a persuasive sermon. How is the poor fellow going to keep his salvation? Not by running away from them. There are too many of them, and they would soon catch him. Not by arguing with them. Their booze would be too strong an argument, and he would soon be convinced. But what can he do to keep his salvation? There is nothing he can do. He keeps his salvation only as he keeps on believing in the Shed Blood. To that poor drunkard, I say: when fumes ascend to your nostrils, just shout, “I am saved by the Blood of Jesus.” A heavenly breeze will soon blow to dissipate those booze fumes. When the bootlegger smiles at you, say to him, “I am saved by the Blood of Jesus.” A scowl will soon displace that smile. You will keep your salvation, not by doing something, but BY FAITH IN THE CLEANSING BLOOD OF JESUS.
Now, Sister, don’t be surprised when the devil comes to you to have a little chat about your healing. Of course, he will not come in his official regalia, but you will be visited by some nice sisters and brothers whom you have not seen for years.
I can hear them now. “Oh, do you think you are really healed?” “Don’t you feel just about the same as you did?” “Was it really the power of God, or did you fall because you were supposed to?” “Isn’t that what they call animal magnetism?” “Or Mesmerism?” “Or hypnotism?” “Or autosuggestion?” Of course, you will argue with them, and try to convince them of their error. But, by the time you get through answering half those questions, your own mind will have been filled with doubt. And by the time you got through answering them all, your healing will have taken flight upon the wings of unbelief. Sister, you get your healing by believing that by His Stripes, you are healed. You keep your healing by keeping the belief that by His Stripes you are healed. So when your neighbor comes and asks, “Are you healed?” just shout, “By His Stripes, I am healed.” When the deacon comes and asks, “Do you think ***?“ just shout, “By His Stripes, I am healed,” before he gets through asking. When you see the preacher coming, just run out and shout at him, “By His Stripes, I am healed,” and he won’t even stop to ask you how you feel. “By His Stripes, I am healed. And by His Stripes, I am kept healed.”
Oh, when I think of the marvelous possibilities inherent in this provision of the atonement, and realize that ministers of the Gospel are not only withholding it but also maliciously fighting it— my heart aches! Think of the innumerable hospitals in this country alone. Think of their suffering multitudes! Think of the blind, the deaf, the halt, the maimed, the paralytic, the cancerous and those who suffer a thousand other ailments! And all these can all receive their healing, if the stewards of God’s grace and mercy were but more faithful to their trust!
Thank God for the ministry of Paul Rader, Sister Carrie Judd Montgomery, Sister Woodworth-Etter, Dr. Yokum, S. D. Gordon, Andrew Murray, and other faithful ministers of the Gospel. Thousands upon thousands of hearts are praising the Lord, because God’s boundless mercy was fully revealed to them in the ministry of these true servants of a Loving God. Yes, My Brother, Sister: Jesus died for your full redemption. His sacrifice was a ransom for your soul, body and spirit. You are completely atoned for by His death upon the Cross, and there is not a square inch of your person that belongs to the devil. Of course, like a professional bill collector, he will come around and put in his claim. But, if you are getting tired of his visits, just hang out this sign: “BY HIS STRIPES. I AM HEALED”!
Oh, My Brother, My Sister, do not let the devil rob you of your heritage. Do not let him take away from you what the Lord Jesus has provided. I want to shout it with all my might. I want to proclaim it from the housetops. I want to sound it with trumpet sound across the plains, and let it echo over the hills: Jesus—the Mighty to save, the Strong to deliver—brought complete salvation to a lost and dying world! Salvation for the soul! Healing for the body! Praise the Name of Jesus! Let us pray!
