There used to have a sign out in front of our local post office that scared me
as a boy. It was a picture of this stern looking old man with white hair and
a white goatee looking straight at me with his arm outstretched and his
forefinger pointed. The caption on the sign said, "Uncle Sam wants you!"
Join the US. Army." If the sign had been a little more friendly I might have
been more inclined to join. On the other hand, I got the impression early in
life that serving Uncle Sam in the Armed Forces was serious business. You
see, those fellows who are in the service are not only there to defend our
country but to defend our name as well. When a marine misbehaves while
oversees the world takes notice as you recall while reading in the news. The
image of the USA. is hurt as a result.
