Though Adam of St Victor was one of the most promÂiÂnent and proÂliÂfic LaÂtin hymnÂists of the MidÂdle Ages, litÂtle is known of him. WritÂers nearÂest his time deÂscribe him as Brito, posÂsÂibly inÂdiÂcatÂing a naÂtive of BriÂtain or BritÂtaÂny. All that is cerÂtain is that around 1130, afÂter beÂing edÂuÂcatÂed in Paris, he beÂcame, at quite a young age, a monk in the AbÂbey of St. VicÂtor, a well known school of theÂolÂoÂgy on the outÂskirts of Paris. He spent the rest of his life there, dyÂing some time beÂtween 1172 and 1192.
