Ackley showed muÂsicÂal talÂent earÂly, learnÂing the meÂloÂdeÂon, piÂano, corÂoÂnet, clarÂiÂnet and picÂcoÂlo as a boy. AfÂter movÂing to New York City in 1888, he beÂgan playÂing the orÂgan in sevÂerÂal churchÂes. In 1907, he joined the Billy Sunday-Homer Rodeheaver evanÂgelÂism team as secÂreÂtary-pianist, and traÂveled with them for eight years. As a comÂposÂer and edÂiÂtor with the RoÂdeÂheavÂer ComÂpaÂny, he wrote over 3,000 GosÂpel tunes.
