Ackley reÂceived muÂsicÂal trainÂing from his faÂther, in New York CiÂty and at the RoyÂal AcadÂeÂmy of MuÂsic in LonÂdon, and beÂcame a great celÂlo playÂer. AfÂter gradÂuÂatÂing from WestÂminÂster TheÂoÂlogÂicÂal SemÂinÂary in MarÂyÂland, he was orÂdained a PresÂbyÂterÂiÂan minÂisÂter in 1914, and pasÂtorÂed in Wilkes-Barre and ElmÂhurst, PennÂsylÂvanÂia, and in EsÂconÂdiÂdo, CalÂiÂforÂnia. For a few years he worked with evanÂgelÂist Billy SunÂday, and alÂso served as asÂsistÂant pasÂtor of ShaÂdyÂside PresÂbyÂterÂiÂan Church in PittsÂburgh, PennÂsylÂvanÂia. He wrote some 1,500 reÂliÂgious and secÂuÂlar songs, and was asÂsoÂciÂatÂed with the RoÂdeÂheavÂer muÂsic comÂpaÂny. John Brown UnÂiÂverÂsiÂty in SiÂloÂam Springs, ArÂkanÂsas, awardÂed him an honÂoÂraÂry DocÂtor of SacÂred MuÂsic deÂgree.
