St. Paul is content to be crucified with Christ because he knows that we have been predestined by God for one reason alone, to be molded into the image of His Son, being crucified with Him on the cross. Just as He did, we must abandon every earthly pleasure. Just as He was, we must remain constant in the midst of suffering. How wretched we are! We want to tear ourselves away from that cross that joins us to our Master. We cannot abandon the cross without abandoning the crucified Jesus Christ. The cross and Jesus Christ cannot be separated. So let us live and die with Him. Let us not be afraid of anything except failing to complete our sacrifice in patience and love. Alas, all the efforts we make in this life serve only to bind us to the world and to tear us away from the cross.
