Uriah answered, “The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my master Joab and his soldiers are camped in the open field. How can I go to my house to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As surely as you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing!”

And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.

And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in booths; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open field; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.

And Uriah said to David, Israel and Judah with the ark are living in tents, and my lord Joab and the other servants of my lord are sleeping in the open field; and am I to go to my house and take food and drink, and go to bed with my wife? By the living Lord, and by the life of your soul, I will not do such a thing.

Uriah answered, “The Ark and the armies of Israel and Judah are living in tents, and my master Joab and his men are camped out in the open. How can I go home and eat and drink and sleep with my wife? On my life I won't do such a thing!”

Then Vriah answered Dauid, The Arke and Israel, and Iudah dwell in tents: and my lord Ioab and the seruants of my lord abide in the open fields: shall I then go into mine house to eate and drinke, and lie with my wife? by thy life, and by the life of thy soule, I will not do this thing.

And Uriah saith unto David, 'The ark, and Israel, and Judah, are abiding in booths, and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, on the face of the field are encamping; and I — I go in unto my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife! — thy life, and the life of thy soul — if I do this thing.'

Uriah said to David, “The ark, Israel, and Judah, are staying in tents; and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open field. Shall I then go into my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing!”

And Uriah said to David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.

And Urias said to David: The ark of God and Israel and Juda dwell in tents, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord abide upon the face of the earth: and shall I go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to sleep with my wife? By thy welfare and by the welfare of thy soul I will not do this thing.

Uriah replied, “The soldiers of Judah and Israel are camping in the open fields, and even our commander Joab is sleeping in a tent, and the sacred chest is with them. ◄How could I/It would not be right for me to► go home, eat and drink, and sleep with my wife [RHQ]. I solemnly declare [IDM] that I will never do such a thing!”

He answered, “I can’t go back to my house. There are big mobs of our soldiers still over there, fighting the Ammon mob. The big boss soldier Joab, and the other boss soldiers, and all the other soldiers from Judah and from all of Israel, they are all camped out in the dry country. God’s special box is there too. I can’t go back to my house. I can’t go and eat meat and drink wine. I can’t go back and sleep with my wife. I’m telling you straight, with God listening, I can’t do that.”

2 Samuel 11:11 Summary

In 2 Samuel 11:11, Uriah shows us what it means to put the needs of others before our own desires. He refuses to enjoy the comforts of home while his fellow soldiers are still in the field, demonstrating a selfless character. This is similar to the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 20:26-28, where He says that true greatness comes from serving others. Uriah's actions are a great example for us to follow, as we seek to live a life of integrity and loyalty to God and to those around us, just as it is written in Proverbs 10:9 that the one who walks in integrity will be delivered.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was Uriah's response to David's question about not going home?

Uriah answered that he couldn't enjoy the comforts of home while his fellow soldiers, including his master Joab, were still in the field, as seen in 2 Samuel 11:11, and this response shows his commitment to his duty and his fellow soldiers, much like the devotion of Jonathan to David in 1 Samuel 18:3.

Why did Uriah feel he couldn't sleep with his wife?

Uriah felt that it wouldn't be right to enjoy the comforts of home, including his wife, when his fellow soldiers were still camped in the open field, showing a sense of solidarity and loyalty to them, similar to the principles of shared hardship and loyalty found in Acts 2:44-45.

What does Uriah's response reveal about his character?

Uriah's response shows that he was a man of integrity and principle, who put the needs of others, in this case his fellow soldiers, before his own desires, demonstrating a selfless character reminiscent of the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 20:26-28.

How does Uriah's actions compare to David's in this situation?

Uriah's actions and response stand in stark contrast to David's, who was trying to cover up his own sin with Bathsheba, as seen in the surrounding verses, highlighting the difference between a life of integrity and one of deception, as warned against in Proverbs 10:9.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some areas in my life where I am prioritizing my own desires over the needs of others, and how can I shift my focus to be more like Uriah?
  2. In what ways can I demonstrate solidarity and loyalty to my fellow believers, just as Uriah did with his fellow soldiers?
  3. How can I cultivate a sense of integrity and principle in my own life, so that I am not swayed by my own desires, but instead seek to do what is right in God's eyes?
  4. What are some ways that I can practically apply the principles of selflessness and loyalty, as demonstrated by Uriah, in my relationships and daily life?

Matthew Poole's Commentary on 2 Samuel 11:11

The ark, it seems, was now carried with them for their encouragement and direction, as was usual: see . In the open fields, to wit, in tents which are in the fields. And to lie with my wife: he might possibly add these words, to insinuate his apprehension of the king’ s design, and to awaken his conscience to the consideration of his sin, and of the injury which he had done him. His meaning is, Now when God’ s people are in a doubtful and dangerous condition, it becomes me to sympathize with them, and to abstain even from lawful delights. Whereby he might possibly intimate how unworthy it was for David in such a season to indulge himself in sinful and injurious pleasures. But David’ s ear was now deaf, his heart being hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

Trapp's Commentary on 2 Samuel 11:11

2 Samuel 11:11 And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? [as] thou livest, and [as] thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.Ver. 11. And Uriah said unto David.] Vir robustior spiritu quam corpore Urias: Uriah was a man all over, having a golden soul in an iron body. His name signifieth the fire of God; and surely the fire of zeal was kindled by God’ s Spirit upon the hearth of his heart, which made him thus resolute to abridge himself even of lawful delights, in a time of common calamity. See the like in Nehemiah, Daniel and his fellows, those good captives. And that any Baruch at such a time seeketh great things for himself, and is not even sick at heart for the breaches of Joseph, father Latimer’ s reason holdeth good; Deest ignis; there wanteth that flame of God, Uriah’ s public spirit. Common dangers or calamities should, like the rapt motion, carry our hearts contrary to the ways of our own private occasions. And my lord Joab.] Josephus saith that Uriah was Joab’ s armourbearer. See here how he fortifieth his resolutions against evil with strongest reasons: we had need to do so daily, looking well to our hearts, as the Dutchmen do to their banks, which if they should not, the sea would soon make a breach upon them. Hereby we shall become "steadfast and unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord." But what a dead lethargy had sin and Satan cast good David into, that hearing all this from Uriah, he yet repented not of his unlawful pleasures, taken at such an unfitting time! How can any presume of not sinning, saith a reverend man, or despair for sin, when we find David thus fallen, risen? Dr Hall.

Ellicott's Commentary on 2 Samuel 11:11

(11) The ark, and Israel, and Judah.—notwithstanding the experience of the capture of the Ark by the Philistines in the days of Eli (1 Samuel 4:11), it seems to have been still customary to carry it out in war as a symbol of God’s presence and pledge of His favour. (Comp. 1 Samuel 14:18.) The separate mention of Israel and Judah gives no indication of a late date for this book, since these two parts of the nation had already been separated, and even hostile to each other in the early years of David’s reign. This noble answer of Uriah should have stung David to the quick, but his conscience was so deadened by his sin that the only effect was to lead him to yet baser means of concealment.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on 2 Samuel 11:11

Verse 11. The ark, and Israel - abide in tents] It appears therefore that they had taken the ark with them to battle. This was the answer of a brave, generous and disinterested man. I will not indulge myself while all my fellow soldiers are exposed to hardships, and even the ark of the Lord in danger. Had Uriah no suspicion of what had been done in his absence?

Cambridge Bible on 2 Samuel 11:11

11. The ark] These wars were “the wars of Jehovah” (see note on ch. 2 Samuel 10:12), and the Ark had been taken along with the army as the symbol of His presence and favour. Cp. Joshua 6:6; 1 Samuel 4:3; 1 Samuel 14:18 (but see note there); 2 Samuel 15:24. Israel, and Judah] The description of the nation as “Israel and Judah” marks the tendency to isolation on the part of Judah, which had been confirmed by the separation in the early part of David’s reign, and prepared the way for the permanent division of the kingdoms. See note on 1 Samuel 11:8, and Introd. ch. I. § 5 (d), p. 13. tents] Properly, booths, rough shelters or huts extemporised out of the boughs of trees. as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth] This form of oath does not occur elsewhere. We usually have either “as the Lord liveth” (ch. 2 Samuel 4:9), or “as thy soul liveth” (ch. 2 Samuel 14:19), or the two combined (1 Samuel 20:3). Possibly “as thou livest” is a textual error for “as the Lord liveth.” The Sept. reads How? as thy soul liveth, &c.
