Today we had invited a pastor from Novy Sad, Serbia in our fellowship. Some of you may remember the place that was subjected to Allied bombardment in the then Yugoslavia in the 1990ies.He reported about his work among the most poorest of the poor, the Gypsies. He showed us pictures of Gypsy settlements that were so run down that you wouldn't not believe that such places existed in Europe. They looked more like garbage dumps than human settlements. They established several churches and child care centres and hundreds of people who found new faith in Christ. How did they reach them ?They distributed food and clothing that were donated from Western European countries like Germany and the Netherlands and UK. They preach the gospel alongside and they receive the message.Just imagine, we give away our unwanted clothes because we fancy new and more fashionable ones and relieve our guilt by giving them to charity organizations. Others take our stuff that is not good enough to keep but too dear to throw away and save souls with it. God uses these means to save souls! It is amazing to see how so little can do so much.1 Corinthians 1:28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are. This pastor and his wife live on a meager pension of $250 a month but they make so many people rich! This raises one question for me: If they can bring in a harvest of souls by ministering to their needs which such simple means, what can we do to reach the people here in Germany? I live in part of the country that has almost no evangelical churches. It is an area dominated by Catholicism. How can we minister to people that have every material blessing that one could think of yet live great spiritual emptiness and darkness? We once had a whole week of outreach in the centre of our little village with a dozen on-fire bible students with exactly zero coming to Christ. Then we had an outreach where we knocked on literally every door in a nearby village and invited people personally to come to a evangelistic rally in our bible school. 3 or 4 came to hear the message, result=none. Then a team of young folks distributed gospel tracts into almost every letter box of the little town where we live.Again, exactly no result.Jesus told us to feed the poor and it works. But how do you feed the empty rich? Sounds absurd, doesn't it?
Jesus also told them to wait until they be endued with power from on high before trying to be His witnesses. It is relatively easy for the poor to listen to those who meet their physical needs. But i truly wonder if they are really saved. For only as a man is brought to see his sinful condition can he be convicted and converted. All men, whether rich or poor, need to be brought to that place of seeing our sin before a holy God. Only the Awesome Holy Spirit can do that...
