Christian Group Compassion Int'l Being Forced to Close Doors, Abandon 147,000 Children in India

(Worthy News) - Christian child sponsorship organization Compassion International could be forced to leave India and the 147,000 children it helps there by March after the government blocked funding from outside the subcontinent.

Compassion, which was founded in 1952 to lift children out of poverty "in Jesus' name" throughout the world, revealed late last year that it was hit by a new application of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, which halted its ability to send funds to more than 500 local child development projects in the Hindu-majority nation.

"We are broken-hearted that the Indian government has put us in a position where we may be forced to close our doors in India. We are praying for a solution that allows us to continue working with our 580-plus churches to provide our holistic child development program to more than 147,000 children," Compassion President and CEO Santiago "Jimmy" Mellado said in an update provided to The Christian Post.

Pray that other ways may be found.

This sounds bad, but I do have a question....

What happens to these children when they become adults? do they revert to the pagan lifestyle that characterizes the prevailing culture?

Just wondering - never heard this question addressed.

 Re:

Compasson works through I believe 200 organizations or more in India, mostly Churches to distribute food and clothing, eduction, etc.

The problem is all those churches were depending on the support to care for these children and now are in a hard place quickly.

This is one reason I advocate for christian ministries to be self-supporting where they can in countries where funds could be cut off like India. Of course it is not wrong to donate there, it is just a reality of life that funds can be cut short for missionaries there.

I believe many of these young people accept Christ and follow him in life and receive an education and chance through compassion's outreaches. You can read more about compassion here: https://www.compassion.com/about/about-us.htm

 Re:

This is actually good thing. In India many hindus claim that Christianity is spreading because of foreign money. This cutting of fund will prove that God is not dependent on Foreign money for spreading his truth. This is a good opportunity for witnessing the truth.
