THE VOICE IN THE MIDST OF DARKNESS...
TEXT: MATTHEW 10:27
"What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye
hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops."
God is the creator of both light and darkness; the sages believed and accepted that darkness cannot hide anything from the gaze of God: light and darkness are alike before Him! Howbeit, in the world of man, darkness is feared and dreaded because of it inherent sinister nature. No race likes darkness! Darkness represents death, limitation, backwardness, confussion and all manner of ills. A man in darkness would never find his ways: he is directionless, confused and naturally incures a lot of bruises.
Wisdom dictates that a man dares not take many steps when in a dark region so as to avoid injuries. A man in darkness would never appreciate colours and arts at all. Scripture says that the Egyptians did not stand up from their positions for three days owing to the darkness caused by Moses' ministry in Egypt. This is typical of darkness! Exodus 10:21-23
"And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward
heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even
darkness which may be felt. And Moses stretched forth his hand
toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of
Egypt three days: They saw not one another, neither rose any
from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had
light in their dwellings.
Anything that boosts pain and fosters discomfort is darkness! Whatever speaks of shame and reproach is darkness. A halt in life's journey and lose of our compass or bearing in life, suggests darkness. Agitation, deprivtion, lose of precious things and all that beg for ceaseless tears are darkness. When the horizon is no longer clear and it looks as though one is inside a dark cell where prisoners are confined, questions would pop up spontaneously. Darkness is not good!
However, we discovered that there were men that entered darkness or who were engulfed thereby and when light came to them, they bare witness that they heard a voice speaking to them from the midst of their darkness(es)! The part A of our text above, which reads thus: "What I tell you in darkness..." tells us that there is a messenger, counselor or a teacher in every darkness! He is light, but He is also present in the midst of our darkness.
He teaches us there...He gives definite instructions and admonishes us therein. He also rebukes us there! Therein, to the sensitive, perfect communion and intimacy are struck and maintained with God. His voice seems loudest in the midst of our darkness. Therein we are blindfolded from all alluring sights and out of reach to all mortal but within reach to Him that speaks and sees in darkness. Darkness is a blessing in disguise! Oh may we not squander our dark moments! There is a teaching voice in every darkness! When darkness is gone, it leaves its 'victim' a better person! Job says, 'when He has tried me, I shall come out like gold...' Your Lord is there! Listen carefully and you would hear Him!
Nebuchadnezzar descended into a thick darkness: upon the lifting of his darkness or when he was lifted therefrom, he was left broken, meek and equipt with a knowledge that every monarch should have, namely, "God rules in the affairs of men, and He gives it to whoever He wants...thrones are His!" God sent him into the bottomless pit or dungeon and there made him to hear Him! A man on a plane or leveled ground cannot learn this kind of lesson at all! The deeper and thicker our darkness, the deeper and thicker our lessons! The general epistle of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4, is a part of the note taken during his dark hour! He heard a voice in his darkness! Hallelujah!
Groaning results from darkness! Therein, murmuring is common! Sighing is not strange in that region! But we should not allowed these to drawn the voice of our teacher. Darkness is a school! Is a university! Therein, our human senses are suspended so that our whole being can see and hear the teacher's voice. Friends, whatever challenges alloted to us is but a classroom! There is a voice in every darkness! There are timeless instructions for life and godliness to be gleaned in every dark momment. To be continued!
