 THE ELEVENTH CHAPTER OF 2 SAMUEL: A SMUGGLED AND DARK CHAPTER.(Pt 2)

TEXT: 2SAMUEL 11:1-2
"And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem./ And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon."

In this part of our devotion on the above theme, we shall, first and foremost look at how way was paved for this annoying chapter in the life of one of God's general that has ever lived. How on earth was this chapter smuggled into the stream of David's walk with God? There appeared a lick in David's boarder: this made it possible for the enemy to smuggle this chapter into his life and destiny.

The portion of this chapter under consideration shows us how the boarder was subtly opened to the enemy. Look at the opening phrase: "And it came to pass..." What came to pass?

"...David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel;
and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged
Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem"

This act of David looks innocent but this is what opened the door for this dark chapter. The 'b&c' parts of verse 1 of this chapter which read thus: "... after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle," can be put into parenthesis or bracket. Even if they are removed, the verse would still make complete sense. But why did the Holy Ghost insert these phrases? The answer is simple: it is to show us the nature and urgency of this time and season that David undertook to rest at home instead of going all out to fight.

So, the phrase: "... at the time when kings go forth to battle..." shows us that the time David chose to rest was a time kings are expected to go forth into battle. David removed his armor, laid down his guard and went to sleep. The Holy Ghost seems to be telling him that the time and season is the time of war and not time to entertain pleasure and give oneself to any kind of indulgence. He sent his men to war but he stayed back to sleep. This is what opened the door for all the evil that a careful student of the Bible would see in the subsequent chapters of 2Samuel. If David had not stayed back, he would not have experienced this shame in his life.

Brothers and sisters, nothing gives the enemy of our soul foothold like when we turn our back on our duty. An idle mind is the devil's workshop. When we are out of the way of duty, temptation sets in. This is the time that kings go forth to battle...we are in war time...the Christian life is a life of constant battle.

Moreover, many servant of God have started behaving like David of 2Samuel 11: they sit back in their airconditioned office and send their "boys" "assistant pastors" into the field and for evangelism, while they dream of been invited to oversees for preaching...rural evangelism is no longer part of their mission. They "tarried still at Jerusalem." Friends, this kind of act looks innocent, but it can dig our grave. Hear the word of God, this is "the time when kings go forth to battle..." oh that we may see what lucks in the Conner against all that would not be warminded and battle-ready.

thetefore,any trumpet that calls for ease and feast at this time
"...when kings go forth to war, must be rejected. A man that carries sword and shield would not have time to touch another man's wife. Temptation comes to the idle and less busy individuals. To be continued.
