The Word "deceive" in the NT

Thought it would be edifying for saints to read through these verses from the NT on this word. A great prayer to pray: "Lord, please keep me your servant from deception in this Christian walk. Amen."

Matthew 24:4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.

Matthew 24:5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.

Matthew 24:11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.

Matthew 24:24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

Matthew 27:63 “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’

Mark 13:5 Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you.

Mark 13:6 Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many.

Mark 13:22 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

Luke 21:8 He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.

John 7:12 Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.”

John 7:47 “You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted.

Romans 7:11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death.

Romans 16:18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.

1 Corinthians 3:18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise.

1 Corinthians 6:9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men

2 Corinthians 11:3 But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

Galatians 6:3 If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves.

Galatians 6:7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.

Ephesians 5:6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient.

Colossians 2:4 I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments.

2 Thessalonians 2:3 Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.

2 Thessalonians 2:10 and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

1 Timothy 2:14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.

2 Timothy 3:13 while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

Titus 3:3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.

James 1:16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters.

James 1:22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

James 1:26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.

1 John 1:8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

2 John 1:7 I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.

Revelation 13:14 Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.

Revelation 20:8 and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—and to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore.

Revelation 20:10 And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

A saying around the local Anabaptists go like this...

"God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called."

When one hears God's voice, one knows that he is not able to add one thing of value to the work of God. This individual understands that he or she is only a vessel prepared for a good work. So those who think they are something, have not as yet, been given this understanding.

Paul wrote:

1Co 2:4
And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of humanfn wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,

1Co 2:5
that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

The power of God does not reside in the individual, therefore the individual has nothing of value.

Yes, this is a favorite of Bros. Walter Beachy and Paul Emerson.... :-)

Personally, I love testimonies that demonstrate the miraculous work of God. The Scriptures are full of them. I love to visualize myself being an observer of these events, understand the dynamics among the people at this point in time.

The fact we see little of it today does not bother me because I know God is in control. Affliction can come because of poor choices, or God may send it to chastise one, in either case ones comfort is disturbed. This is not bad if it forces us to look to the LORD for insight into our situation.

Since this is the case, I know I am vulnerable to stories of the miraculous and how these miracles can and will lend credibility to the miracle-worker. But I have to keep reminding myself how the WORD warns us of these miracle workers and their power to deceive. SO. So, I better stick with the WORD and revel in those stores because I know they are true and they will not mislead. They demonstrate the power of God, his authority over nature, over political powers, whatever that works to get us all bent out of shape. If God does miracles I am glad, I will rejoice. What I consider the most important is that my name is written in the Lamb's book of life. Now, THAT is a miracle!
