Kutai of Indonesia
Partially due to their frequent relocations, the Kutai live spread out along the eastern coast of East Kalimantan. In the past, the Kutai had a system of social classes that included nobleman, ordinary people, and slaves. The nobility used to be called Kramas, Mas, Aji, and Radenor Pangeran Datu. Today, respect is given to people based on their education and wealth, not their title. Generally, the Kutai are Muslims. However, in their daily lives, they still worship spirits. Previously, the Kutai were Hindu and they were called 'Kaharingan'. Since then, however, most people in the Kutai area have turned to Islam. This has resulted in much mixing between the faiths of Islam and Hinduism.
No Christian resources are reported as available in the language of the Kutai. No scripture, no Jesus film, no Gospel recordings or other resources.
Perhaps Christians in other Indonesian tribes will be led to take the news of Christ to the Kutai. Pray especially they will make contact with Kutai Christians, and will be able to help these people grow to spiritual maturity.
Pray for the followers of Christ
The few people in the Kutai people group who identify themselves as Christians need prayer support. Pray they will clearly understand the distinction that must be made between a real disciple of Jesus Christ and that of a casual commitment to the Christian religion. Pray they will learn to live in the power of Christ's Spirit, demonstrating love, joy, peace, and all the fruit of the Spirit.
Pray for the entire people group
The Kutai need better transportation infrastructure to assist the remote villagers in taking their crops and commodities to the market. At present, the main form of transportation is by sea and river, as land transportation is very difficult.
