John 11:43- 48 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.John 11:53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. The story continues…..John 12:1 - 2 Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.John 12:9 - 11 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.edit: Did you get that! "THAT THEY MIGHT PUT LAZARUS ALSO TO DEATH"Every time I read this story I am amazed at the evil in the religious heart of man that instead of recognising the miracle performed by Jesus and believing on Him, they plotted to kill both Jesus and Lazarus; to kill both the healer and the healed; the truth and the evidence to truth. We hear it said that if there were true and outstanding miracles today then the world would take note. Don’t believe it! The establishment would not want to acknowledge any evidence for the truth of God. They want to supress it and hide it, just as the Pharisees did here. Why did they want to supress the truth in unrighteousness? Because they wanted to keep their positions and status (John 11:48), even if it meant killing. It is the same today. Men who do not want the truth will kill the messenger and the beneficiary of the message. Is this not what we see when our brethren throughout the world are killed / martyred by wicked men whose only crime is to be a testimony to the reality of the living God in them?
Yes religion always persecutes the truth.
The children of the flesh persecute the children of the Spirit. Gal_4:29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. We have to watch out for this in ourselves. Rom_8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
