 A Question to Consider?

A Question to consider: What is the difference between "deceitful lusts" and "ungodly lusts"?

And if a person understands the difference between "deceitful" and "ungodly" lusts, what visible indicators make it clear which lusts you are observing?

 Re: A Question to Consider?

The key to understanding the difference between "deceitful" lusts and "ungodly" lusts is "accountability".

Eve was "deceived" by the Serpent whereas Adam disregarded the command of God. This is why Paul wrote - "sin entered the world through one man's disobedience (para akouo in the Greek). The word means - "to hear aside" or "disregard".
Adam was more accountable than Eve.

"Ungodly" comes from the Greek word which has the basic meaning of "refusing to fall back." Ungodly men defy the authority of God by refusing to submit to it.

This is a key to understanding "ungodly" lusts. These lusts have been exposed by the ministry of the Spirit; therefore, those who continue to walk in them are doing so "defiantly". These lusts are no more "sins of ignorance" - they have become "willful" sins - sins unto death.

They may have been "deceived" by them at one time, but now they have refused the love of the truth and chosen to walk according to their own "ungodly" lusts.

Those who walk according to their own "ungodly lusts" are not deceived like Eve. No,they have rejected the word of the Lord like Adam. They have heard that they are to "put off the old man with its deceitful lusts but have rejected this word and chosen instead to make provision for the flesh.

Men in this state now refuse the love of the truth and will no longer endure sound doctrine, but in order to suit their own desires, they will turn their ears away from the hearing of the truth. They will amass to themselves teachers who speak of a new understanding of grace, promising men liberty that appeals to their sinful desires. This new grace becomes their license to self indulgence.

Having begun to turn their ears away from the hearing of the truth, these men become the grumblers, and "mockers" the apostles warned the church about. They live by their own natural desires - they are "Soulish" men, who do not have the Spirit. Such men murmur against men filled with the Holy Spirit who expose "deceitful" lusts.

The tell tale sign that men are walking in "ungodly" lusts is that they begin to "mock" the truth. If men are being deceived by lusts, they may well receive the ministry of the truth when the Spirit reproves them of sin; but, if they have rejected the truth, and become hardened in their disobedience - they will openly mock the truth and divide the church.

 Re:

Good quetion, and good article.

I like questions that make me really think and consider what God's word says, and how we understand it.

Thanks.
