Charles Finney on the 'Decay of Conscience'

Charles Finney on the 'decay of conscience'

Charles Finney brought this strong charge back in 1873: “The error that lies at the foundation of this decay of individual and public conscience originates, no doubt, in the pulpit. ... Brethren, our preaching will bear its legitimate fruits. If immorality prevails in the land, the fault is ours in a great degree.

“If there is a decay of conscience, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the public press lacks moral discrimination, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the church is degenerate and worldly, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the world loses its interest in religion, the pulpit is responsible for it.

“If Satan rules in our halls of legislation, the pulpit is responsible for it. If our politics become so corrupt that the very foundations of our government are ready to fall away, the pulpit is responsible for it.

“Let us not ignore this fact, my dear brethren; but let us lay it to heart, and be thoroughly awake to our responsibility in respect to the morals of this nation."

Re: Charles Finney on the 'Decay of Conscience'

Haven't quite made it that far in his book "Sermons On Gospel Themes" as of yet; but, indeed looking forward to the chapter on "The Inward and Outward Revelation" where he speaks on the conscience. Finney doesn't mess around - he's no man appeaser, and I thank God for him. His writings are so profound; it is easy to see the Spirit working through him, convicting and pointing to Christ. No wonder God worked through him mightily. He's a rebuke to many "revivalists" today. Anyway, thanks for the Finney quotes. I believe many of God's people today live under the curses of disobedience recorded in Deuteronomy 28.

Re: Charles Finney on the 'Decay of Conscience'

I know there is great influence that comes upon those who sit under man's teaching but the conviction of the Spirit is something shared by all who believe. It seems so natural to consider lastly our own moral responsibilities when others are stand so prominent in the limelight, but we who believe, are not left so vulnerable and ill equipped. If anything, our conscience speaks unmistakably if it is truly the Holy Spirit who speaks within us. He does not dwell in darkness and one of the beauties of his indwelling is His fierce opposition to the will that seeks its own. What temptations are there that cannot be overcome through Him? If we are left so vulnerable that a man elevated physically by a pulpit can also exercise spiritual elevation as well, then what good is the equipping that comes as a gift of necessity from God? Does God indwell and keep silent? Though there is substance to the damage that can come from a pulpit, the last thing the bride needs confronting the culture of this world, is an excuse to relieve her responsibilities.
