 The seven deadly lies ....

Hi
I am working on a concept for an artwork that will expose the 7 deadliest lies believed by mankind. I came up with these 7 that I need some critique on, maybe some suggestions / advice / refernces / thoughts on them ....

they are:

1- There is no God
2- There are many ways to god
3- There is no afterlife
4- We evolved
5- Gay is ok
6- We can understand God
7- We can please God

Thanks

Re: The seven deadly lies ....

Why not deal with the actual 7 deadly sins?

If you stick to your list number 5 sticks out too much. Why have you chosen that? I think that is too much in your face. I think you could take these actual list and make artwork for each of them vs. all of them togehter. They are broad enough to give you more creativity in getting your thoughts across. Just something to think about...

Funny how many see these as the deadly sins when we also have the the 10 commandments and they aren't considered the 9-10 deadly sins? 'Remeber the Sabbath' is a loose one.

Lust – to have an intense desire or need: “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28).

Gluttony – excess in eating and drinking: “for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags” (Proverbs 23:21).

Greed - excessive or reprehensible acquisitiveness: “Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more” (Ephesians 4:19).

Laziness – disinclined to activity or exertion: not energetic or vigorous: “The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns, but the path of the upright is a highway” (Proverbs 15:19).

Wrath – strong vengeful anger or indignation: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (Proverbs 15:1)

Envy – painful or resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by another joined with a desire to possess the same advantage: “Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation” (1 Peter 2:1-2).

Pride - quality or state of being proud – inordinate self esteem: “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).

 Re:

Why these particular 7 - which seem aimed to address certain people?

How about hypocrisy: Never living fully and truthfully.

Quote:
A major lie:

"There is no hurry."

Also a lie:
You must hurry.

 Re:

Jochbaptist,

You may be to something in your aim to portray falsehood in art. How about the idea of trying to be what we are not - as an attempt to mask our sense of shame, fear of abandonment, etc. You could touch a lot of heart strings - in ways that words cannot. Note how this poet tries to depict this human predicament:

Please hear what I am not saying

Please hear what I am not saying.
Don't be fooled by me.
Don't be fooled by the face I wear.
For I wear a thousand masks
that I'm afraid to take off,
And none of them are me!

Pretending is an art that's second nature with me.
Don't be fooled…..
I give the impression that I'm secure,
that all is sunny and unruffled with me.
Within as well as without,
Confidence is my name
Coolness is my game.
The water is calm and I'm in command.
I need no one.

Don't believe me…please.

My surface may seem smooth,
but my surface is a mask.

Beneath this lies no complacence.
Beneath dwells the real me in confusion,
in fear and alone.

But I hide this; I don't want anyone to know it.
I panic at the thought of my weaknesses and
fears being exposed.
A nonchalant, sophisticated façade
to help me pretend
To shield me from the glance that knows.
But…such a glance could lead to my salvation…
That is, if it is followed by acceptance,
if followed by love.
Love is that only thing that will assure me
of what I can't assure myself
…I am worth something!

But I won't tell you this.
I don't dare.
I am afraid to.
Perhaps your glance will not be followed
by acceptance and love.
I'm afraid that you'd think less of me,
that you'd laugh at me.
Your laugh…would kill me.
I'm afraid that deep down I'm 'nothing',
that I'm 'no good'

So, I play my game, my desperate game.
With a façade of assurance without,
and a trembling child within,
My life is a parade of masks, a front.

I chatter to you in the swave tones of surface talk.
I tell you everything that is really nothing,
And nothing of what is really everything,
Nothing of what is crying within me.
So, do not be fooled by what I am saying.

Please listen carefully;
try to hear what I'm not saying,
What I'd like to be able to say,
what I need to say,
but can't!

I do dislike the superficial,
phony game I'm playing.
I'd like to be genuine and spontaneously 'me',
but I need help.

Hold out your hand
even if it's the last thing I seem to want.
Each time you are kind,
and gentle, and encouraging,
Each time you try to understand
because you really care
My heart begins to grow wings,
Very small, feeble wings-
but wings that will one day help me to soar
on the wings of your encouragement.
You are so important to me.
You can help me to break down the wall
behind which I tremble.
You can help me to remove my mask.
You can help me to be released
from my shadowy world of panic,
uncertainty and loneliness.
It will not be easy for you,
My walls are strong,
But I am told that love is stronger than any wall.

Perhaps you could build a bridge to my heart
and Jesus could cross over into my life.

You may wonder who I am,
You know me well
I am every man and woman you meet.

Here's another one:

If you do your best with sincerity and good intentions God will accept it.

Cain found out otherwise.

Re: The seven deadly lies ....

Sorry I took so long to respond…..

DEADn - Thanks, I do plan to do 7 different sculptural objects. The project brief is to make an artwork out of concrete. I plan to call the work "concrete truths" and each of the 7 objects will dispel a different lie that the father of lies deceives the unsaved with, to build their lives upon (the sand). No 5 is to defend the fact that mankind is created in His image - male & female. Sexuality and sexual identity is a major component of life, and once you fall for his lies in this department, the rest of your life is destroyed with it. I think your suggestion of referring to the 10 commandments is great, but the 7 deadly sins will probably switch many in the art world off immediately - therefore I rather used “deadly lies”.

TMK - that is a good one!

Roadsign - I value a response from you. I chose these 7 because I am aiming at the lost, and used the foundational revelations from Genesis 1, 2&3 - The existance of God, the creation, the first marriage, temptation, sin, judgement and reconciliation etc. Thanks for the poem …. it illustrates a major lie that says - We are OK.

TrueWitness - I think that one fits perfectly in with No 7- We can please God. Thanks.

Blessings

One of the biggest lies we see today is God really doesn't care about Holiness.

Re: The seven deadly lies ....

About #5, if they are walking right with God they will know supernaturally that there is NO sexual sin that is OK.

Repentance. An important lie is that God knows everything and therefore we don't have to confess our sins and repent.

God bless,
Lisa
