The Battle of Pornography by Brandon Bennett

The Statistics…

+ Worldwide revenues for the pornography industry in 2006 were at least $97 billion, with revenues in the United States fourth highest among all countries at $13.3 billion. Previous numbers put the worldwide revenues for pornography at $57 billion for the year 2003.
+ Pornography revenues in China were the highest for 2006 at $27.4 billion with South Korea at $25.7 billion and Japan at $20 billion.
+ Every second $3,075.64 is spent on pornography; 28, 258 Internet users view pornography; and 372 Internet users type adult search terms into search engines.

Ten Encouragements for Your Battle…

[Adapted from David Platt’s Secret Church: Marriage, Family, Sex, and the Gospel]

+ Cultivate unshakable zeal for the glory of God’s name.
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).

+ Acknowledge your sexual drive as a good gift from a gracious God.
The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time (1 Corinthians 7:3-5).

+ Run from every temptation, knowing that one sin is enough to warrant infinite damnation.
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires (Romans 13:14).

+ Guard yourself with godly friendships and gospel accountability.
Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin (Hebrews 3:12-13).

+ Contemplate the price Christ paid for your purity. See Him writhing on a cross in agony. Fight tempting images with that image.
Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot (1 Peter 1:13-19).

+ Consider the compassion Christ has for the souls of men and women. Love and pray for them; don’t exploit and abuse them.
From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh (2 Corinthians 5:16).

+ Believe that God is for you… and knows what is best for you.
He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things (Romans 8:32)?

+ Memorize and meditate on Scripture.
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night (Psalm 1:1-2).

+ Ponder the eternal danger and destruction associated with sexual sin.
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming (Colossians 3:5-6).

+Ponder the eternal delight and joy associated with future salvation.

Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever (Psalm 73:25-26).

If pornography has become a sinful pattern for you, confess your sin to God. If you are an unbeliever, look to Christ who bore sin and death and then crushed it by rising from the grave. But if you are a believer, look to Christ too, for he has truly set you free. Remember that because you are a now a slave of God, you are no longer a slave to sin (Romans 6:6). Then seek another believer who can hold you accountable in fighting this sin: “Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:1-2).

Speak to your pastor, elders or a spiritual brother in your area for counselling and confession.
