Romans 13:6-7 -- Giving Honor to those in Authority / Good & Evil

Romans 13:6-7 (King James Version)

6For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

7Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

A Question was raised this Sunday after a sermon was preached about giving honor, respect and 'high esteem' to those in authority in our lives.

How are we to obey this scripture when somebody in authority is not obeying God? Those in authority were ordained by God in their position of authority, both good and bad, but how are we to obey and honor them when they live a life that is sinful?

How did Jesus do this? He would never ask a single thing from his followers that he did not do himself.

We do not obey or honor anyone based on the character of their life. We do it based on their position otherwise Jesus would not have obeyed any authorities because all men are lacking in character (all have sinned).

Give us an example of someone that you don't want to honor or obey. The Word says to "give honor to all men".

We do this for the Lord's sake. For His testimony on earth. This is the example that He left us, to walk in His steps.

Read the below verses. They pretty much sum it up.

1Pe 2:13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;
1Pe 2:14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.
1Pe 2:15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
1Pe 2:16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.
1Pe 2:17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
1Pe 2:18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
1Pe 2:19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
1Pe 2:20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
1Pe 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
1Pe 2:22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

May I suggest we do this by being respectful, treat them as valued human beings.

Our deacon used to say there are people in positions of authority who are not honorable, however, one must always honor the position even when the one occupying this office is not worthy.

For this very reason I was pleased when our granddaughter went out to see President Obama when he visited her town. She saw him and he her and they waved....someone asked her why on earth did she do THAT? "Because he IS the president, that is why." Loved her attitude.

Seems to me one would be dishonoring the LORD by committing acts of belligerence towards those in authority. How can these acts communicate the love of Jesus? Afterall, the scripture says they are God's ministers...
