 Re:

Justified,
My dear friend, there is really not much a New Testament precedent for constant self-examination. We find 2 plain-as-day exhortations to examine ourselves in Paul's writings: one in 1 Corinthians 11:28 and another in 2 Cor 13:5. The former is in the context of receiving the Lord's supper and in the latter, Paul seems sure that they will find themselves as saved. Also, the Church to whom Paul was writing was one which was known for it's extreme toleration for gross sin. (i.e.-the toleration and pride concerning the man having his father's wife--1 Cor 5:1-2) Naturally, a Church in this state should be examining itself. However, the typical Christian who is in a constant state of self-examination are those like yourself, dear brother, who are praying, in the Word and desperately seeking God. Methinks that you are most definitely NOT the type of person Paul was suggesting examine themselves!

Self-examination CAN be a healthy thing when it is done at the SPIRIT's prompting! However, when we presume to search our hearts outside of His leading we will often find ourselves sinking into condemnation and unbelief. Remember, it was the fruit from the tree of the "knowledge of good and evil" which brought separation between Adam and God. Oftentimes heart-searching become an exercise similar to partaking of this fruit.

It has been a popular trend for the last few years to preach false-convert style messages. In the Gospel and New Testament scriptures, however, this type of preaching is strangely lacking in volume. TO the contrary Paul seeks mostly to remind his readers as to who they truly are in Christ as opposed to who they "might not be".

Dear brother--believe on the finished works of Christ Jesus. He loves you and does not make it difficult for those seeking salvation to receive it. To say that we must have a certain feeling in order to know we are saved is simply human traditions and holy "hocus-pocus". We are saved through faith in Christ's finished works. Feelings WILL follow faith, but faith should never follow Feelings! God bless you bro!

Jeff
