 Grace Alone (Poem)

GRACE ALONE

Based upon Ezekiel 16:4-6: "And as for your birth, on the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to cleanse you, nor rubbed with salt, nor wrapped in swaddling cloths. No eye pitied you, to do any of these things to you out of compassion for you, but you were cast out on the open field, for you were abhorred, on the day that you were born. And when I passed by you and saw you wallowing in your blood, I said to you in your blood, 'Live!' I said to you in your blood, 'Live!'"

A helpless, hopeless babe was I,
Vile and foul and cursed was I!
Wallowing in blood in an open field,
Alas! Behold! My doom was sealed!
With no eye to pity, Hell’s mouth opened wide
To swallow this wretch, this worm full of pride!

A child of Adam and stained with sin,
Accursed, depraved, God-hating within!
I abhorred Your righteousness, for I trusted in mine,
I didn’t need repentance, my religion was fine!
How evil! How wicked! How hopelessly lost!
How foolish I was not to consider the cost!

Though daily on me Your sun did rise,
I rejected You still and thought myself wise!
Ripe for judgment and everlasting fire,
For I lived like a pig in the muck and the mire!
Fuel for the fire! A child of darkness!
Wholly corrupt and helplessly hopeless!

But when You passed by with grace to pour out,
You washed me entirely, within and without!
You said to me, “Live!” A new creature! Set free!
The blindness was gone, I could finally see!
For the first time ever I saw the glory
Of the wondrous Cross and the Gospel story!

You put a new heart and a new spirit inside,
Your Spirit came in to dwell and reside!
You invaded my life, what a glorious entrance,
Then granted me faith and gave me repentance!
I believed at once, I turned from my ways
To treasure Your glory for all of my days!

Having believed, You declared me righteous!
A wretch though I be, before You I’m blameless!
You adopted me in, You lifted me up,
You seated me with Christ and filled up my cup!
Though once Your enemy, You made me Your friend,
You filled me with gladness and joy without end!

Though I didn’t seek You, You found this lost sheep!
You made me Your own, forever to keep!
You're my inheritance and I am Your child,
Because of Your Son we've been reconciled!
I long for the day when we’ll meet face to face,
My boast in that day will only be grace!
