Walking with God by J.R. Miller

Walking with God

(J. R. Miller, "In Green Pastures" 1890)

"Direct my footsteps according to Your Word;
let no sin rule over me." Psalm 119:133

This is a prayer which should always be on our lips.
We should get our direction from God, not once in
our life only, when we first give ourselves to Him;
not at the opening of each day only, as we go forth
to the day's task; not merely at the beginning of
each new piece of work or of each fresh task--but
every moment, for each step.

That is what "walking with God" means.

We may make this so real, that we shall look up
into God's face continually, asking, "What next,
dear Lord? What shall I do now? Which course
shall I take today? How shall I do this duty?"

If we can but have God's guidance and help for
the little short steps--we need not fear for the
long miles--the great stretches of road. If each
step is of His directing--the long miles will be
paths of His choosing.

"Direct my footsteps according to Your Word;
let no sin rule over me." Psalm 119:133

Today I notice how beautiful it is that God put these two together. covering our need for “What/where/When/How” and our condition as we walk.

I remember the time I prayed less, knowing the truth of the need to pray more, draw by examples, encouraged by God’s Word. At the same time I also remember struggling with time and tasks that I knew made a difference to God and all the needs. Slowly I saw and continue to see all the time consumed in going off-path, without prayer, and the time spent cleaning-up messes from that. Time better spent with the Lord in prayer. What is more, the racket of the world is dimmed, sometimes even to silence, and the dust that the world kicks up is settled down. He even makes me smile to recall the added blessing that each hour in prayer is an hour that old-man remains are kept between my Father and I, and not loosed on the world of those I love. Will these days be remember as times we prayed less?

May God recondition our hearts with prayer: "Direct my footsteps according to Your Word; let no sin rule over me." Psalm 119:133
