Misquotes

Brother Mike were musing this morning and he came up with a good idea. Sharing "misquotes," quotes that sound true but in truth are not.

Here's mine: I'll be "someone" when I've fully surrendered.

It's patently untrue but it's something the Lord has shown in my own heart and something I had to repent of. Although full surrender to Christ is God's intent for our lives, we must allow the Holy Spirit to search our hearts to make certain our motives are pure.

Psalms 24:3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place?
4. He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

 Re: Misquotes

Hmmm... kind of a confusing topic to me. So why am I posting? [laughs] I don't know. Ummm... I think the only one I know of is:

"Cleanliness is next to godliness".

I remember discussing in a college age home fellowship recently about whether all truth is God's truth. We came to the conclusion that it's not. An example I thought of was a lyric from a band that said:

"Cheating gets it faster".

I guess you could say that's true. But that's not God's truth. [laughs] I guess I'm kind of changing the subject. Sorry. I'm done now.

 Re:

I was sitting in a pew a couple of weeks ago. (I am not often in pews) and caught a couple of 'ministers' chatting behind me. I have no idea of the topic of the conversation but one sentence almost had me in tucks.

"we are just praying it will be third time lucky"

 Re: Tucks?

Hey, what does "tucks" mean? So would that quote kind of be along the same lines as, "Dear God, help me win the lottery!"? You guys have the lottery in the UK? Sadly, that and gambling in casinos are big 'round here. It's the poor people that end up wasting their money!

 Re: Misquotes

Didn't think you were going to take me seriously Ed :-)

Here's all I could come up with:

"I don't have anything to say" :-P

 Re:

UK Glossary:
putting someone in tucks: saying or doing something which causes the watcher or hearer to become a convulsed heap of helpless laughter.

You see, you would have known this if you hadn't decided to go your independent ways all those years ago. 8-)

More along the lines of the man who prays;

Lord, give me patience... NOW!

Very cute! But, I wasn't alive all those years ago, so that wasn't me. I actually don't think I agree with what we did. Like we learned at church in 1 Peter, I think chapter 3, last weekend, you're supposed to submit to your masters and to authority, whether they're good to you or they're harsh. I don't know that I agree with all the rights we have either. But that's a tangent we won't go down in this topic.

As for the Boston Tea Party, I probably would have been a part of that if I were alive all those years back 'cause I don't like tea! Yuck! Throw it all over board! [laughs]

 Re: Misquotes

Gideons, that was a great that you shared that with us. I dont have any quotes to share, but this is a pretty cool thread. I have enjoyed the other insights here too.

 Re: Misquotes

Okay, I may not have the right idea but here it goes...

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe."

"The fear of death is the most unjustified of all fears, for there's no risk of accident for someone who's dead."

"A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeeded be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death."

"Before God we are all equally wise - and equally foolish."

"A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of others ."

"All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree. All these aspirations are directed toward ennobling man's life, lifting it from the sphere of mere physical existence and leading the individual towards freedom."

"I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the objects of his creation, whose
purposes are modeled after our own -- a God, in short, who is but a reflection of human
frailty. Neither can I believe that the individual survives the death of his body, although feeble souls harbor such thoughts through fear or ridiculous egotisms."

…may he rest in peace
