Re: Great Quotes

Faith's most severe tests come not when we see nothing, but when we see a stunning array of evidence that seems to prove our faith vain.

 Tauler on Dependence

Those who are God’s true witnesses are firmly anchored in Him, in love or in suffering, no matter what God may give or take away. They do not set much store by their own methods; if they prove helpful to their spiritual life, well and good.
But God, in his loving foresight, often shatters their foundations and thus they frequently find themselves thwarted.

If they want to keep vigil, they are obliged to sleep; if they like to fast, they are made to eat; if they would like to keep silence and be at rest, they have to do otherwise. In this way, everything they cleave to crumbles, and they are brought face-to-face with their bare nothingness.
Thus they are shown how total is their dependence on God, and they learn to confess Him with a pure and simple faith, with no other support to sustain them.

Just as worldly and frivolous people are seduced by the pleasures of their possessions, so religious people take pleasure in their complacency, both in their actions and in their emotions.
And thus they are prevented from an absolute surrender to God and from a true poverty of spirit according to Gods will.
Johannes Tauler

 Re:

"Instead of so knowing Christ that they have Him in them saving them, they lie wasting themselves in soul-sickening self-examination as to whether they are believers, whether they are really trusting in the Atonement, whether they are truly sorry for their sins -- the way to madness of the brain and despair of the heart... Instead of asking yourself whether you believe or not, ask yourself whether you have, this day, done one thing because He said, Do it! or once abstained because He said, Do not do it!

It is simply absurd to say you believe, or even want to believe, in Him, if you do not do anything He tells you."

The saintly Andrew Bonar used to soak his pillow with tears every Saturday night in Scotland as people below trampled the streets returning from the taverns and shows. He would cry from the depths of his agonizing heart, "Oh! They perish, they perish!"

 Re:

"know in part, and prophesy but in part, that knowledge which is perfect will come, and that which is partial will be done away (1 Cor. xiii. 8-10, 12), in which all our mistakes will be rectified, all our doubts resolved, all our deficiencies made up, all our endeavours in preaching, catechising, and expounding, superseded and rendered useless, and all our prayers swallowed up in everlasting praises,—in which prophecy, now so much admired, shall fail, and tongues shall cease, and the knowledge we have now shall vanish away, as the light of the morning-star does when the sun has risen,—in which we shall no longer see through a glass darkly, but face to face. In a believing, comfortable, well-grounded, expectation of that true and perfect light, I desire to continue, living and dying; in a humble and diligent preparation for it let me spend my time, and in the full enjoyment of it Oh that I may spend a glorious eternity!"
-Matthew Henry
