Thirsty For Revival

Thirsty For Revival

By A. E. Reinschmidt

Many Christians have experienced so little of the Holy Spirit, that when we lose Him we feel no great sense of loss or need. We measure ourselves by contrasting ourselves with the world: and we conclude that it is the world that needs God. But the truth is, the world is so godless because Christians are so empty of God. We must, therefore, when we think of revival, ask the Spirit to convict us of our own desperately unspiritual condition. Unless we are willing to see that we are spiritually dead ourselves and are satisfied to remain as we are and will not open ourselves to the Holy Spirit that He might awaken us to see ourselves – revival is far from us.

Believers must draw near to God and be re-filled with His Spirit, so that they may become ministers of revival to lifeless Christians. Unless the Church is revived first, sinners will not be "born again." No soul is ever "born of God" unless someone goes down in the valley of spiritual travail for him. And no one can cooperate with the Holy Spirit in this way unless he seeks and finds a deeper experience in the Holy Spirit.

Where Is the Spiritual Water That We Need?

Water in the Scriptures, is symbolic of the Holy Spirit (John 7:37-39). The Holy Spirit is the Heavenly Water. To drink of the Spirit (1 Cor. 12:13) is to drink of the heavenly river of water of life.

Scripture says: "Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters…hear, and your soul shall live" (Isa. 55:1-3). "If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give Me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of Him and He would have given thee living water" (John 4:10). "...If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink" (John 7:37). "And the Spirit and the Bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely" (Rev. 22:17). "...And, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold…" (Ezek. 47:1).

What could bring this river of water of life any nearer to us than it is right now? But we are not stooping down to drink. We must stoop down if we would drink of that river. One must come down till he is low enough for his lips to touch the water. This calls for self-humbling. This is why the Lord calls upon His people to "…humble themselves…" (2 Chron 7:14). "He giveth grace to the humble" (1 Pet. 5:5).

To have revival requires two things. One is a thirsty soul, who is painfully conscious of thirst. Two is the thirsty soul must come to the water and must be willing to humble himself so he may drink of that low-lying river that issues out "from under the threshold." Let us think revival; pray for revival; believe for revival; live revival!
