The Life That Can Pray
By Andrew Murray

Our power in prayer depends upon our life. Where our life is right we shall know how to pray so as to please God, and prayer will secure the answer. Hear the Lord Jesus in the parable of the vine: "If ye abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you" (John 15:7). And again at the close of the parable: "Ye did not choose Me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should abide: that whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in My name, He may give it you" (v. 16).

It is the branch life that gives power for prayer. We are branches of Christ, the Living Vine. We must simply live like branches, and abide in Christ. Then we shall ask what we will, and it shall be done unto us. The branch is simply a growth of the vine, produced by it and appointed to bear fruit. It has only one reason of existence; it is there at the bidding of the vine, that through it the vine may bear and ripen its precious fruit. Just as the vine lives to produce the sap that makes the grape, so the branch has no other aim but to receive that sap and bear the grape. Its work is to serve the vine, that through it the vine may do its work.

The believer, the branch of Christ, the Heavenly Vine, is as exclusively to live only that Christ may bear fruit through him. A true Christian as a branch is to be as absorbed in and devoted to the work of bearing fruit to the glory of God as Christ the Vine was on earth and is now in heaven. It is to such that the unlimited prayer promises of the parable are given. With our life abiding in Him, and His Words abiding, kept and obeyed in our heart and life, there will be the grace to pray aright and the faith to receive the whatsoever we will.

God’s covenant is ever: Give all and take all. If one is willing to be wholly branch, and nothing but branch, is ready to place himself absolutely at the disposal of Jesus the Vine of God, to bear His fruit through him, and to live every moment only for Him – he will receive a divine liberty to claim Christ’s "whatsoever" in all its fullness. And he will have divine wisdom and humility to use it aright. He will live and pray and claim the Father’s promises even as Christ did, only for God’s glory in the salvation of men. He will use his boldness in prayer only with a view to power in intercession and getting men blessed.

The Divine Husbandman

Jesus said, "I am the true Vine, and My Father is the Husbandman" (John 15:1). We have not only the glorified Son of God in His divine fullness, out of whose fullness of life and grace we can draw – this is very wonderful – but there is something more blessed still. We have the Father, as the Husbandman, watching over our abiding in the Vine, over our growth and fruitbearing. It is not left to our faith or our faithfulness to maintain our union with Christ. The God who is the Father of Christ, and who united us with Him – will see to it that the branch is what it should be. He will enable us to bring forth the fruit we were appointed to bear. Hear what Christ said of this: "…every branch that beareth fruit, He purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit" (v. 2). More fruit is what the Father seeks; more fruit is what the Father will Himself provide. It is for this that He, as the Vinedresser, cleanses the branches.

The one great work that a vinedresser has to do for the branch every year is to prune it. To abide in Christ and to bring forth much fruit and to be able to ask whatsoever it will, the one thing the branch must do, is to trust in and yield itself to this divine cleansing. What is it that the vinedresser cuts away with his pruning knife? Nothing but the wood that the branch has produced – true wood with the true vine nature in it. This must be cut away because it draws away the strength and life of the vine, and hinders the flow of the sap to the grapes. The wood of the branch must decrease, that the fruit for the vine may increase. Death is the way to life; gain comes through sacrifice. The rich growth of wood must be cut off and cast away that the life more abundant may be seen in the cluster.

Child of God, there is in you that which appears perfectly innocent and legitimate, and which yet so draws out your interest and strength that it must be pruned and cleansed away. It is only as our own will and strength and effort and pleasures, even where these appear perfectly natural and sinless, are cut down so that the whole energies of our being are free and open to receive the sap of the Heavenly Vine, the Holy Spirit, that we shall bear much fruit. It is in the full and willing submission to God’s holy pruning knife that we shall come to what Christ chose and appointed us for – to bear fruit, that whatsoever we ask the Father in Christ’s name, He may give to us.

Christ tells us what the pruning knife is: "Ye are clean through the Word which I have spoken to you" (v. 3). What heart-searching words Christ had spoken to His disciples on love and humility, on being the least, and, like Himself, the servant of all, on denying self, and taking the cross, and losing the life. Through His Word the Father had cleansed them, cut away all confidence in themselves or the world, and prepared them for the inflowing and filling of the Spirit of the Heavenly Vine. It is not we who can cleanse ourselves; God is the Vinedresser. We may confidently entrust ourselves to His care.

Re: Herald of His Coming Monthly Newspaper: FREE

I'll echo the recommendation here for this newspaper. It is really good! It has a great focus on prayer and revival, with articles from the present and the past.

It also goes out internationally all over the world; on the back of the newspaper it has letters from their readers and it's so neat to read of the blessing this paper is to Christians all over the world.

Re: History of Hearld of His Coming

HISTORY OF HERALD OF HIS COMING

Herald of His Coming came into being in Los Angeles, California in 1941. Willard C. and Sarah Foulkes Moore had been traveling and holding meetings, Brother Moore teaching on prayer. In 1941 God directed their steps to Los Angeles, where they had met and married a few years previously, being in their late 40's at the time.

They were living in a small room of a church, using the auditorium to gather people to pray. A printer who was a man of prayer offered to print a paper for them to help spread their deep burden that the Church worldwide be clothed in holy garments, ready to meet Christ at His coming. Brother and Sister Moore had no experience in editing and had no thought of printing a paper. Neither had they any money. But a friend who had given them $50 to print tracts agreed they could use the money toward the paper.

The first edition of 10,000 copies had a good reception, and a second was printed. Others followed, and in this way God led His servants into publishing Herald of His Coming monthly. In 1943 Gospel Revivals Inc. was established as the non-profit corporation which publishes Herald of His Coming.

God made the Moores to know Herald of His Coming was to be undenominational. It was to be kept unworldly and unadorned and printed economically on newsprint that it might be sent without charge, that no one be denied the Gospel because they could not afford to pay for it.

After the church in which they were working closed, God led the Moores through a series of moves, to a large second-floor room in a former mortuary in downtown Los Angeles. They were living and working here when the building was put up for sale. Through the sacrificial giving of friends, they were able to purchase the building and here the ministry was housed for about 25 years.

As many as 12 to 15 workers lived and worked in the building. Additional workers lived in economical hotels nearby. A number who helped shoulder the work not only volunteered their time but also gave to the work from their modest pensions. Others whose love and zeal for the Lord made them gladly willing for the simple, unworldly, dedicated living and working which the humble ministry required, received in exchange room and board and a small allowance for necessary expenses.

Calls for Herald of His Coming began to come from around the world, and eventually the paper was being mailed into as many as 200 countries. The number of papers printed grew steadily until a peak was reached in the early 1960's of 425,000 monthly. Six four-page papers for the unsaved were printed and mailed by the hundreds of thousands. A number went to distributors who took them to the highways and by-ways of the world to many beyond reach of the post office. About 20 of Brother and Sister Moore's editorials were printed in tract form and circulated by the tens of thousands.

From the beginning, prayer was the heartbeat of the work. Lone prayer vigils in early morning or late night, twos and threes agreeing together throughout the day, prayerful hearts at the work desk, and especially the gathering of the staff in the old mortuary chapel, where prayer times were sparked by the fiery, faith-filled prayers of Brother and Sister Moore -- all told that God's blessing on the ministry was dependent on and the result of prayer.

The ever-present needs of the ministry for workers and finances were brought before the Throne of God as well as the need for divine blessing on the messages of the Herald. Always there were prayers for revival and for the salvation of dying souls. Often God was beseeched to send deep conviction on sin to bring men to repentance, for without repentance, God cannot come and save and deliver and heal -- whether it be the individual soul or a nation.

Brother and Sister Moore sometimes wished they could do nothing but shut themselves away and pour out their lives in prayer. But God had placed on their shoulders the responsibilities of the worldwide work of Herald of His Coming, and they were faithful workers, giving themselves from early morning until late at night -- their breaks being mostly prayer breaks, or breaks for necessities such as sleeping and eating and short walks. They lived in the simplest of rooms alongside the staff. Personal comforts and conveniences were all but forgotten in their zeal to finish the work God had given them to do and in their loving concern for their co-workers.

The fire in their hearts had been lighted by God and it was fueled by the Holy Spirit whose anointing they humbly and constantly sought. Supported by coworkers of like heart and mind, likewise sparing not themselves for the sake of world revival and world evangelization, the Moores were able to send out the fiery messages and faithful teachings from God's Word regularly, without fear or favor.

God also gave a host of priceless friends from among Herald readers scattered around the world. Some were hearts already akin, and others had a fresh fire kindled as they read the paper. Taking the ministry on their hearts for prayer, sending gifts even to the point of sacrifice, and ordering copies to help spread the flame -- made them invaluable coworkers in the continuation and growth of the ministry.

In 1968 it seemed wiser to move from the old building in downtown Los Angeles than to fix it up to meet changing fire codes, and so the Moores and part of the staff moved to the high desert outside Los Angeles. The mailing department remained in the Los Angeles area for convenience' sake. All but a minimum staff and the Moores moved back to a Los Angeles suburb to merge with the mailing department in 1972 when a suitable building was found to lease.

It was in 1973, when Sister Moore's strength was totally spent, that God gathered her to her rest. Brother Moore and faithful staff members carried on the ministry until he, too, at the age of 90, was called above in 1980.

Re: Herald of His Coming Monthly Newspaper: FREE

Though these papers and newsletters that we receive from certain ministries cost money, it's a real encouragement when they get some money to help cover the cost. I generally send $10 US cash every once in awhile, it's my way of saying, "Don't Stop" whatever you do.
