When my wife and I really started getting serious about living a holy life, one of the sermons that God brought along for us was called "Love and Loneliness", by Catherine Booth, co-founder of the Salvation Army. (Full text of the sermon is available here: ) We found the sermon surprising, and sobering all at the same time. We know that we are on the right path. Loneliness in this day and age is part of the journey.

Teamtoucan, what a timely blessing it was for you to come upon Catherine Booth's wonderful article. Surely God led you to it.

I have learned that when we accept the pain of loneliness, we then come to cherish it as sacred “aloneness” . It is a blessed divine calling: "... the Lord has SET APART the godly for himself." Ps 4:3
Ravenhill said "Great eagles fly alone,
great lions hunt alone,
great souls walk alone
- alone with God."
Mrs. Cowman wrote in Streams in the Desert:
No bird is so solitary as the eagle.
He who will fly as an eagle does
into the higher levels where cloudless day abides
and live in the sunshine of God,
must be content to live a lonely life.
God seeks eagle-men.

No man ever comes into a realization of the best things of God,
who does not learn to walk alone with God.
We find Abraham alone at Horeb,
Moses forty years in the desert alone with God;
Paul sent into the desert.

Let God isolate us.
In this isolating experience
He develops an independence of faith and life
so that the soul needs no longer the constant help,
prayer, faith, or attention of his neighbor.

We must dare to be alone.
Jacob must be left alone
if the Angel of God is to whisper in his ear
the mystic name of Shiloh;
Daniel must be left alone if he is to see celestial visions;
John must be banished to Patmos
if he is deeply to take and firmly to keep the print of heaven.

From Streams in the Desert (Dec. 20): by Mrs. Charles Cowman

In the place of loneliness our Lord speaks to us, transforms us, and inspires us. Over the centuries, great things - great works of God, great movements had their beginnings in the place of loneliness.
