"Should we fall into a sin, let us humble ourselves sorrowfully in his presence, and then, with an act of unbounded confidence, let us throw ourselves into the ocean of his goodness, where every failing will be cancelled and anxiety turned into love." - St. Paul of the Cross

God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6).

If we humble ourselves, choosing to walk in honesty and brokenness, we will experience God’s abundant grace to cleanse us, fill us with new strength and bring about a supernatural transformation in our inner life. - K.P. Yohannan

“They who once know the sweetness of each Lord’s day celebrating his supper, will not be content, I am sure, to put it off to less frequent seasons. Beloved, when the Holy Ghost is with us, ordinances are wells to the Christian, wells of rich comfort and of near communion.” - C.H. Spurgeon

"Be violent against yourself and allow no pride to live in you, but be so humble and small that everyone will be able to walk over you and press you down like the dust in the streets. You prideful person, what do you have to complain about?" - Thomas A Kempis

"Can anyone who spends several years in those seats of learning, be excused if they do not add to that learning the reading of the Fathers? The Fathers are the most authentic commentators on Scripture, for they were nearest the fountain and were eminently endued with that Spirit by whom all Scripture was given. It will be easily perceived, I speak chiefly of those who wrote before the council of Nicaea." - John Wesley

 Re: John Wesley's Quote

I cannot agree with John Wesley.

The Church at Ephesus was even nearer to the fountain (which I assume he meant the time of the apostles) and they were already in error (Rev. 2:1-7).

Paul said: “I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.” (Acts 20:29-30).

Scripture alone is God-breathed.

And Christ Himself is the Truth and the Fountain of Life.

Any believer today who is in Christ and Christ in him is as near to Truth and the Fountain of Life as any similar believer at the time of the apostles.

We are only far away from Truth and the Fountain of Life when other things have come in between Christ and us. Time is of no relevance.

Also, it is the Holy Spirit who leads us into all truth and discloses Christ to us (John 16:13-15). Any believer today can be as “eminently endued” with the Spirit as a first century believer. And no believer in any century will be filled with the Spirit if he is filled with flesh.

"Do we Protestants realize what we have been doing? In selection of our Old Testament canon and text [the Hebrew Masoretic Text which is devoid of the Apocrypha], we have been siding with the unbelieving scribes and Pharisees---the 'brood of vipers'---against our faithful Christian brothers and sisters of the first and second centuries [who used the Greek Septuagint which contains the Apocrypha]. What bitter irony! Maybe it is we who are the blind guides!"

- David Bercot (Early Church Historian)
