The point I was attempting to make was that the law was given ONLY to reveal mankind’s sinful condition and their need for a Savior. It was NOT given as a solution to the problem of sin.

The law is ONLY a diagnostic tool to show what was wrong but it has NO power or ability to fix the real issue.

Tuc, I understand what you are saying but have you considered that the Law doesn't only show the wrong but also very vividly pictured atonement for those who believe.

For example, the Law was very specific about bringing burnt offerings;

Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock. If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD. And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him. (Leviticus 1:2-4)

In placing his hand on the head of the offering the man identified himself with the sacrifice and his guilt was symbolically transferred to the animal. Then the innocent animal would die in the place of the guilty - a substitute.

Once again the Lord was reminding the people that the only way to acceptance with Him was to believe that He is a righteous God and a Savior. In offering the animal the people were giving an outward evidence of their inward trust in God as a righteous Savior. It showed they believed in Him. When God saw the death of the animal He was satisfied that the requirement of the law of sin and death was justly met. The Lord honored the person's trust in Him and credited righteousness to his account, just like He did with Abraham.

For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. (Romans 4:3)

In Christ,

 RE:Burnt offerings;

These instructions are an example of God's Grace in the Old Testament.

There is ONLE ONE solution for mankind's sin and that was solved by God in Christ on the Cross. We are saved, kept, purified, sanctified, made holy and cleansed ONLY by Grace through faith in what God in Christ has already accomplished for us and in us.

It is impossible to have a mixture of law and grace. The bible makes its clear that if we are saved by the law then there is no grace. If we are saved by Grace then the law is no longer needed. Under the new covenant Christ makes us a NEW creation by giving us HIS LIFE. Now HE abides in us and sets us free from the domain of sin.

Do not forget the the blood of the animals never removed the sins. This blood only covered them for a short time.

Heb 9:8-14; "The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Abraham believed God - not the law. He was justified by faith not the law.

Exactly! So the Law was given not ONLY to show what is wrong but also it pictures the way of acceptance with God through faith.

Now obiviously our faith is no longer evidenced by burnt offerings of the herd. But like those who were given the Law, we are saved by grace through faith.

In Christ,
