Christianity is not a religion of effort (i.e. of doing our best). The key word is union. We bring forth what what we unite with. United to our fleshly nature, no matter how hard we try, or how many rules we make, we will bring forth the works of the flesh - not one good work among them. ON THE OTHER HAND, truly united by the Holy Spirit to Jesus the resurrected Lord, without human effort - we will naturally bring forth the fruit of the Spirit. It is not effort, but union.
