| Extinct Hymns. | | I found this hymn by J A Alexander. Published in 1874.
How I long that such hymns would find their way to the church again.
(A Time We Know Not When) J A Alexander
"There is a time, we know not when, A point we know not where, That marks the destiny of men To glory or despair.
There is a line by us unseen, That crosses every path; The hidden boundary between God's patience and his wrath.
To pass that limit is to die-- To die as if by stealth; It does not quench the beaming eye Or pale the glow of health.
The conscience may be still at ease, The spirit lithe and gay; That which pleases still may please, And care be thrust away.
But on that forehead God has set, Indelibly a mark Unseen by men, for men as yet Are blind and in the dark.
Oh, where is this mysterious bourn By which each path is crossed? Beyond which God himself hath sworn That he who goes is lost?
How far may we go on in sin? How long will God forbear? Where does hope end, and where begin The confines of despair?
The answer from the skies is sent, 'Ye that from God depart, While it is called today, repent, And harden not your heart!'" (J. A. Alexander)

| Re: Extinct Hymns. | | Many hymns have become extinct possibly because of the strong Gospel message in them. Many churches have forsaken them because of a great lukewarmness that has enveloped the church. _________________ James

| Re: Extinct Hymns. | | A song was mentioned in a message a I read a while back called "Shut In With God" or perhaps that was part of the chorus? I haven't been able to find it anywhere. Would anyone know this song or just part of it or maybe even know where I might find it online?

Was it this one? See last verse...
My stubborn will at last hath yielded; I would be Thine, and Thine alone, And this the prayer my lips are bringing, "Lord, let in me Thy will be done."
Refrain Sweet will of God, still fold me closer, Till I am wholly lost in Thee; Sweet will of God, still fold me closer, Till I am wholly lost in Thee.
I'm tired of sin, footsore and weary, The darksome path hath dreary grown, But now a light has ris'n to cheer me; I find in Thee my Star, my Sun.
Thy precious will, O conqu'ring Savior, Doth now embrace and compass me; All discords hushed, my peace a river, My soul a prisoned bird set free.
Shut in with Thee, O Lord, forever, My wayward feet no more to roam; What pow'r from Thee my soul can sever? The center of God's will my home.

Shut in with God
The disciples were praying for the power to fall Ten days they did tarry, on God they did call Then God sent His spirit to baptize them all For they had been shut in with God
Chorus Shut in with God in a secret place There in the spirit, beholding His face Gaining new power to run in this race Oh, I love to be shut in with God
Of all pleasant places on land or on sea Theres no place on earth that is sweeter to me Than to kneel at the feet of my Master and Lord For there, Ill be shut in with God
The pathway to Heaven, though rugged it may be Ill travel til my precious Saviour Ill see Then the gates of that city will open for me And there Ill be shut in with God

That's it! Thank you so much, UntoBabes! Where did you find it? Is it available online somewhere, so I can hear it put to music? :)

Thank you, Alive-to-God, for this one as well! I'd never heard it before, either. Loved it! :) |

| Re: | | I don't know the song you are talking about, Drema, but Elisabeth Elliot use to say that the old hymns were so RICH with theology about God as compared to the more popular praise choruses of today that repeat a phrase over and over again. If you've read any of her writings that are so deep, she attributes a lot of her walk with God to the fact that they had "family prayers" every morning and night, with her (I think) father playing a hymn on the piano as they sang their way through the hymnal when she was growing up. What a heritage!
Sometimes you can find older hymnals in used bookstores, and they are quite a treasure. I have some from relatives back in the early 1900's. Even though we may not be familiar with them, just reading through them is such a blessing. |

I don't have any that old, Mama. They must be a treasure! I've never thought to look for them in used bookstores, wonderful idea! I love to read the words, too, they have so much to say... |
