| | The Cost of Declaring His glory by Helen Roseveare
Topic: Scripture(s): Isaiah 11:1, Isaiah 49:2 | | Description: Helen Roseveare spoke this message in 1975, sharing candidly of personal tests and trials she underwent while serving as a medical missionary in the Congo (now Zaire), including pride, marital longings, prolonged illnesses, and beatings, rape and imprisonment by rebel forces. The cost of declaring the glory of the Lord Jesus costs all our heart, soul and body. "The branch," Roseveare says, "had to lose its leaves and flowers to become an arrow;" such is the privilege of sharing in the sufferings of the Lord Jesus.

A privilege to hear the Lessons Jesus is teaching her. | | Many years ago when I was a young missionary, I read Helen Roseveare's books, I Asked for a Mountain, He Gave Me a Valley and Living Sacrifice. The testimony and spiritual lessons presented in them have stayed in my heart, but since then God has taught me some of the same lessons. What an encouragement this message is to help me look at my service as a missionary as a privilege and not even consider the cost, as I once did. I am especially glad to hear Helen's comments about the spiritual lessons the African Christians taught her.
| Good personal testimony and view to God's ways in suffering | | This is the first time I'd ever heard Isaiah 11:1 (the branch) and 49:2 (the arrow) combined like that, and Roseveare's expounding on it and application was powerful. The spirit of this message is very honest and I took note of the Lord's ways she shared of how sufferings work for His glory. |
