Give Thanks to God by Erlo Stegen

Topic: Thanksgiving
Scripture(s): Matthew 8:1-4
Description: We read here that this happened when He had come down from the mountain, where He had just preached a sermon, the most powerful sermon ever preached (Matt 5-7). It is also a very difficult passage, e.g. where Jesus said that if you’re married and you look at another woman with lust you have already committed adultery (Matt 5:28). He also said that if you get angry with your brother and you call him a fool or other names, then you deserve hell, because before God you’ve murdered him (Matt 5:22). It would be good to read this again and again because the Lord expects us to live accordingly. He also said that if someone forces you to walk a kilometre with him, then walk two (Matt 5:41). If someone strikes you on the one cheek, turn the other also (Matt 5:39). Read it prayerfully and ask yourself what kind of a life you live.

The Cross Of Christ - Part 1 by Art Katz

Topic: Cross Of Christ
Scripture(s): Matthew 27:37-54
Description: Just like Isaiah saw the Lord on a throne, high and lifted up, beholding the train of the his glory, and as a result Isaiah came to apprehend what he was. So also we need an apprehension of God as demonstrated through the cross to know what we are. If we are not able to behold the cross, and see how God demonstrated himself, how will our idolitries be abolished? To the degree that our perception of God is distorted, so also are we distorted. With unconventional wisdom, Art Katz relishes in all that the cross will afford its most ardent adherents. He bids the church to drop their porcelain and sentimental attachments to creedal views of Calvary. We are warned in this sermon that a Christianity which is ever fixated upon the initial salvation level the cross affords, will never challenge the status quo in this world.

The Three Hours' Darkness by C. H. Spurgeon

Topic:
Scripture(s): Matthew 27:45
Description: A SERMON DELIVERED ON LORD'S-DAY MORNING, APRIL 18TH, 1886, BY C. H. SPURGEON, AT THE METROPOLITAN TABERNACLE, NEWINGTON. “Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.” — Matthew 27:45. FROM nine till noon the usual degree of light was present; so that there was time enough for our Lord's adversaries to behold and insult his sufferings. There could be no mistake about the fact that he was really nailed to the cross; for he was crucified in broad daylight. We are fully assured that it was Jesus of Nazareth, for both friends and foes were eye-witnesses of his agonies: for three long hours the Jews sat down and watched him on the cross, making jests of his miseries. I feel thankful for those three hours of light; for else the enemies of our faith would have questioned whether in very deed the blessed body of our Master was nailed to the tree, and would have started fancies as many as the bats and owls which haunt the darkness. Where would have been the witnesses of this solemn scene if the sun had been hidden from morn till night? As three hours of light gave opportunity for inspection and witness-bearing, we see the wisdom which did not allow it to close too soon. Never forget that this miracle of the closing of the eye of day at high noon was performed by our Lord in his weakness.

God's Wrath Satisfied by David Downs

Topic: Wrath Of God
Scripture(s): Matthew 27:45-56
Description: The topic of this sermon deals with God's wrath being satisfied on the Cross. People do not take their sins seriously. Because many do not take sin seriously, they do not take the cross seriously and therefore the wrath of God seriously. This is a very practical, clear, strong exhortation and teaching to understand the wrath of God in Scriptures.
