The Burnt Offering by Roy Hession

Topic: Burnt Offering
Scripture(s): Genesis 22:7-8, Hebrews 11:17-19, Leviticus 1:3-4
Description: Here in Genesis we read of the Lord testing Abrahams faith, which is confirmed in Hebrews 11. Isaac was to be the burnt offering which would produce a sweet smelling savour to the Lord, we see him here in the place of the lamb that bows his head instead of stiffening his neck. Pastor Hession shows there are 3 key sayings in these verses, 1: Where is the Lamb? when we are stubborn and self willed where are the lamb like qualities in us that marked the life of our Lord? 2: God will provide Himself a Lamb, this He did in the form of his Son, the Lord Jesus, Who was the only One Who could offer up a sweet smelling savour to God. 3: He shall be accepted for Him, here is the wonder of His substitution for us that God credits to us the sweet savour that ascended up from Calvary.

A Type and Its Teaching by C. H. Spurgeon

Topic: Offering
Scripture(s): Genesis 22:8
Description: PUBLISHED ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 3RD, 1916. DELIVERED BY C. H. SPURGEON AT THE METROPOLITAN TABERNACLE, NEWINGTON. “And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering.” — Genesis 22:8. How stern the trial; how striking the triumph; how sublime, both in action and passion, was the faith of Abraham in that terrible crisis. It pleased God to try him on a very tender point. Abraham had received a great promise, on the fulfillment of which he greatly relied. Year after year elapsed, but no sign of the long-looked-for child appeared. At length old age crept over the patriarch and his wife. Still he looked steadfastly for the promise, because he believed implicitly in the Promiser. He considered not the infirmities of his own body, nor the deadness of Sarah's womb; but he waited patiently, nothing doubting that God would in due time, according to his promise, give him a son. What marvel that this son, when born, should be the object of his fondest affection! Moreover, a strange halo of hope gathers round the lad's head, for God has made him the heir of a covenant. It is in Isaac and in Isaac's seed that God will fulfill his covenant which he has made with Abraham. Nay, something more mysterious still is linked with that youth's life. It is in him that all the nations of the earth must be blessed. And now when the Lord says, “Take thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest,” there is a cut in every word at the most tender part of Abraham's soul.

(Genesis) - Part 20 by Zac Poonen

Topic: Genesis
Scripture(s): Genesis 22:10-23:20
Description: The test that Abraham passed in offering up Isaac is whether he feared God or not. We face this same test not in the areas we obey so easily but in immediate obedience in the things God speaks to our hearts in secret. Our worship is not measured by our correct doctrine or what songs we sing but whether we give to God that which costs us something; it's our attitude towards God that matters most.

(Genesis) - Part 19 by Zac Poonen

Topic: Genesis
Scripture(s): Genesis 21:1-22:10, Hebrews 11:11, Galatians 4:21-31
Description: The birth of Isaac came at the end of Abraham and Sarah laying hold of God by faith despite their ups and downs. Isaac and Isaac contrast believers under the old covenant (done in the strength of the flesh) and those of the new covenant, that which is done supernaturally. God's tests come to see whether He is first in our life. Abraham went against human reason, counted the cost, and obeyed God in offering Isaac, the first mention of worship and also a picture of the resurrection.

 Joyous Laughter by Erlo Stegen

Topic: Joy
Scripture(s): Daniel 12:3-10, Genesis 21:6
Description: Just as Sarah laughed so we laugh too because of the Lord Jesus having come into our lives. We were barren and withered, dead in our sins, but Jesus came and brought us life. Now we can display the fruits of righteous. The Bible says my heart is full of joyous laughter because I've found salvation through the Lord Jesus. In Hebrews 11 we read of the faith of Abraham and Sarah.

The Necessity of Secret Prayer by David Wilkerson

Topic: Secret Prayer
Scripture(s): Matthew 6: 5-7,Genesis 21:33
Description: It is essential that Christians spend time daily shut in with the Lord, giving him quality time. A praying woman who spends time regularly with the Lord has an orderly home. If there is chaos, and confusion, it is because of a lack of prayer, most of the time. This is a firm, but loving rebuke to those who do not pray as they know they are supposed to. Issues as to why the lack of prayer are addressed in a helpful way.

The Sin of Sodom On Display in America by Voddie Baucham

Topic: Sodom
Scripture(s): Genesis 19:1-11
Description: Genesis 19:1-11 is a clear statement on the sin of sodomy. Unfortunately, there are many in the “Christian” community who have come to doubt, or even refute this fact. The homo-sexual movement has succeeded at clouding the issue through creative exegesis, ad hominem attacks, and genetic fallacies. Nevertheless, the Bible is clear.
