(Daniel) Purity in the Face of Adversity by David Guzik

Topic: Adversity
Scripture(s): Daniel 1
Description: The book of Daniel begins around the year 605BC, the people of Judah are taken captive by Nebuchadnezzar as he is on his way back to Babylon from defeating Necho king of Egypt at the battle of Carchemish. Daniel was amongst these taken as he was one of the young shining lights of the people of Israel, they were taken so that they might be indctrinated into the Babylonian way of thinking and work for the king in his civil service, of course they were also taken as hostages. The young men of Israle were given new names, each to do with a Babylonian god, a good education and meat from the kings table, this last thing daniel politely refused as eating such things would have made him spiritually impure. The refusal to eat the food offered could have carried with it a death sentence but Daniel took the responsability upon himself so as not to endanger the chief eunuch, Daniel and his companions gave themselves to the Lord in a remarkable way and the Lord blessed them in return in a remarkable way.

 1) Ministry From Spring Harvest - Chapter 1 by George Verwer

Topic: Resolved
Scripture(s): Daniel 1
Description: The key to this passage, and its application, is the fact that Daniel “resolved”. Verwer focuses on God’s providence, and Daniel’s resolve, holiness and perseverance. The holiness must be presented in a culturally-contextualized way so as to properly demonstrate a clear message. "Theological tidbits" and extremism must be avoided to keep them out of the way of the message.

(Daniel: The Man God Uses #1) Christ the Goal by Ed Miller

Topic: Christ
Scripture(s): Daniel 1
Description: Ed begins the first of six messages from Daniel to illustrate the principles of the making of the man He uses. The foundation is the direction of the heart, the deliberate decision to set one's heart to honor God. History is the stage on which God works to make Himself known, and God always uses men. (This series was delivered in 1990)

 2) Ministry From Spring Harvest - Chapter 3 by George Verwer

Topic: Spiritual Toughness
Scripture(s): Daniel 3
Description: Pressures surround every Christian; the fear of death, society, peers, accusations and backbiting. To face these we must have courage, or spiritual toughness, just as the men in this passage did. Deliverance by God is amazing, and the enemy will sometimes be destroyed by their own methods. The most important thing is always the presence of God in the trial, as he was in the furnace.

(Daniel) The Writing on the Wall by David Guzik

Topic: Belshazzer
Scripture(s): Daniel 5
Description: During the reign of Belshazzar the king, Darius the Mede laid seige to the city of Babylon, Belshazzar though was so unconcerned about this seige that he decided to hold a party for all his friends, this is so common today how the world is teetering on the brink of destruction and eveyone, in the west at least, is partying and concerned with what is on the television. But God decides to 'crash' this party and manifests a disembodied hand to write on the wall, this terrifies the king and he calls for Daniel to interpret the writing. This is a type of how the world seek out the children of God when 'the writing is on their walls'. Belshazzar offers Daniel riches and power but Daniel isn't interested and rebukes Belshazzar saying that he should have humbled himself like Nebuchadnezzar, but because he hadn't the kingdom would be taken from him and divided, and this was fullfilled that very night when Darius' army stormed Babylon

 3) Ministry From Spring Harvest - Chapter 5 by George Verwer

Topic: Failure
Scripture(s): Daniel 5
Description: Verwer emphasizes that God will let failures happen; he will not always overrule and save us from ourselves. When this happens we should not expect that he will withhold judgment. Daniel’s wisdom is shown yet again not only in translating the message from God but in his refusal to take the gifts the king offered for his service.

(Daniel: The Man God Uses #5) Fragrance of Christ by Ed Miller

Topic: Christ
Scripture(s): Daniel 5
Description: God's hand is in the life of the ungodly, but not all the ungodly will positively respond to the fragrance of Christ. Belshazzar could read the handwriting on the wall but didn't have the life to understand what it meant. The lesson we learn from Daniel's life is that it's our business to know Him; it's His business to make Himself known through us.

Evil Is At The Gate by Carter Conlon

Topic: Evil
Scripture(s): Daniel 5, Galatians 6:7
Description: Carter Conlon speaks of the great moral and spiritual evil at the doorstep of the Church and America. He speaks of the history of sins in the culture of America and in the Church including slavery. Evil is becoming good and good is becoming evil. It is time to turn away godless false religion and seek God in prayer now because evil is at the gate.

(Daniel) In the Lion's Den by David Guzik

Topic: Daniel
Scripture(s): Daniel 6
Description: Darius the Mede was the leader of the army that captured Babylon and killed Belshazzar, he became regent over Babylon under the rule of Cyrus king of Persia. By this time Daniel was probably around 80 years old and yet still had faultless integrity to the degree that the enemies of this man of God couldn't find any skeletons in his closet even after more than 50 years in civil service. They came to the conclusion that they would only trap Daniel because of his faithfulness to God, so they got Darius to pass a decree that no one should pray to any god except him for 30 days. In the face of this Daniel did the safest thing he could.. exactly what he had always done and stayed faithful to God. For this Daniel was condemned to be cast into the den of lions, the night he was in the den Darius neither slept nor ate, Daniel prayed as it was his custom to pray 3 times a day. We find that in this remarkable occasion Daniel was kept due to his habitual lifestyle, he remained faithful to God and the Lord blessed him for it.

(Daniel: The Man God Uses #6) Life of Christ by Ed Miller

Topic: Christ
Scripture(s): Daniel 6
Description: What follows the fragrance of Christ? Ed shows the striking similarities to Daniel's being thrown into the lions' den to the death and resurrection of Christ. Daniel being conformed to the death of Christ results with the life of Christ, a living in His resurrection power!

 Prayer by Charles Anderson

Topic: Prayer
Scripture(s): Daniel 9-10
Description: Charles Anderson points out the swiftness of petition and the power of prayer from the life of Daniel. 'The fastest thing in the universe,' he says, 'is not light but prayer.' Here is the crux of the whole message: 'While there are still more than two billion souls going to hell without Jesus Christ who've never heard the gospel message on our planet, our prayer life ought to be totally transformed from the little stuff we are petitioning God for to a battering ram against the forces of hell.'
