A.A Allen 01

Description: One of the most controversial Voice of Healing evangelists, A. A. Allen was severely criticized for his ministry dramatics and sensationalism, and was totally renounced by denominational officials for his personal habits. Despite controversial situations, today Allen is noted as one of the most important revivalists to have emerged during the Voice of Healing revival.

Description: Allen drew criticism from the AG headquarters in the 50s from his exaggerated healing claims and supernatural occurrences. However, people continued to follow him and miracles continued to happen. The darkest shadow came on his ministry in 1955 as Allen was charged with drunken driving while in Knoxville, TN. Evangelist R. W. Schambach was Allen's assistant at the time, and for the first time on record, gives a startling, accurate account of the ordeal in my book, God's Generals. The pressure from the accusation caused Allen to resign from the Voice of Healing organization and to turn in his credentials to the AG headquarters.

Description: His commitment to old-time faith healing continued. Even though the thrust of the movement began to fade out in the late 60s, Allen announced that he was purchasing the world's largest tent. He began Miracle Magazine with a circulation of over 200,000. But controversy continued to surround his life, as in 1967, Allen was sued for $300,000 in back taxes, and separated from his wife, Lexie. Now in poor health, Allen checked into a motel room outside of San Francisco, awaiting a doctor's appointment the next day. At 9:15 P.M. the same evening, Allen was found dead in a chair in front of his television. He was fifty-nine years old. The coroner's report is explained in detail in my book, God's Generals.
