Summary of sermon by Erlo Stegen on Pentecost Sunday
John 15: 26 & 27: But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me. And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.
Today we remember the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. He worked in His own way, so that on the first day 3000 were converted and soon after 5000. The fearful disciples who had been so scared that they hid behind locked doors were changed into bold preachers who could fearlessly declared: "You crucified the Christ", and people were moved to repentance.
There are some governments who have foolishly tried to fight against the laws of God. In 1789, the revolutionary nation of France declared that the seven day week is a Christian institution and part of the old regime. They did away with it and instituted a ten day week. People got sick with physical and mental exhaustion. Even the horses became sick. When Napoleon came to power he abolished it, in 1805, and reverted back to the seven day week, with Sunday as the official day of rest. May our government and all governments understand that rejecting God's ways is inviting disaster upon ourselves. All nations should ask themselves when trouble is rampant, "are we still follow in the ways of the Lord?"
The first Christians decided to keep the Sunday as their day of worship and rest because Jesus rose from the dead on the Sunday. Today we are thankful for their decision, for Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath.
Do you hallow the Sunday to worship the Lord, or do you only find time for your own things? No wonder that you are so impoverished.
This Sunday in particular is special because we also celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. But it won't help you to celebrate this great event unless the Holy Spirit is poured out and working in your life.
Do you pray for the Sunday service that the Lord would speak to you and others, or are you indifferent to God's Word and work?
Do you take heed of God's promise: Matt 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
You need to spend time alone with God and pray that He provides your needs.
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth. When the Holy Spirit has come in your life, the facade and pretence is gone and you live in the light. Having the Spirit of truth you would confess in truth and not excuse yourself.
If you want the Holy Spirit to indwell you, you have to be upright, honest, true, and sincere at all times. Otherwise you are only bluffing yourself.
If on Sunday you come to church and have fellowship with fellow Christians, but on Monday you are fellowshiping with the people of the world and the things of the world, then you're a liar and a hypocrite.
1 Cor 10
20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.
21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.
The Word says you must work out your salvation with fear and trembling. Have you ever feared and trembled before the Lord, where all pretence and lies are gone and you stand in truth before the Lord Who sees and knows all?
Take the step which the Holy Spirit commands you to take. Let Him fill your life. Then Christ will be real to you.
