Summary of sermon by Erlo Stegen, 24 June 2012, first service of Youth Conference

Rom 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

Rom 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord

After the beginning of the work of the Revival in Mapumulo a desperate young man came to Rev Stegen late one evening. He was on the verge of committing suicide as he was in debt and all his hopes had been dashed.

He told Rev Stegen how he had always wanted to go to Bible College and his parents made every effort to get him educated and he was able to go. Once there he met a girl whom he made pregnant and he was asked to leave the college. He had told the girl to keep it secret but things always come to light…"Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Luk 12:2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. Luk 12:3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs. Luk 12:4 "I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. Luk 12:5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.

The young man was shocked when the college Rector called him and he had to leave the college. He could not hold a job down. He borrowed money and fell into debt. His girlfriend’s parents hated him. Then he thought of suicide as the only way out.

It was at this point that he found himself walking past a building where he heard singing and it was like heaven to him. They had no instruments and were singing with all their heart. He asked the singers how to find help and they directed him to Rev Stegen. He poured his heart out and Rev Stegen prayed with him. He was offered a bed for the night. He dreamt of going alone on a difficult journey with hills and valleys. He came up against an unsurpassable wall. He prayed but his prayers bounced off it. It seemed to him that God was on the other side and there was no way to get to Him. The Lord told him he had built the wall himself with his own sins and that each brick was a sin he had committed. On waking he asked Rev Stegen to pray for him as he confessed all the sins God revealed to him. He continued doing this for a week wanting nothing between him and the Lord. His depressed, dark expression changed to one of joy. Every day it got brighter. A man offered him a job and he could pay off his debts. He made the business flourish because he had God’s blessing on his life. He was able to marry the girl and they lived happily with their two children.

Isa 59:1 Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear.
