Only a sweeping religious awakening will bring God back to our nation and save our land. We need a religious awakening that will expose the bitter, devilish, evil of sin. But how may we have such a religious awakening?

As in the time of Samuel, as in the time of Ezra, as in the time of Elijah, as in the time of Jehoshaphat, as in the time of Luther, as in the time of Knox, as in the time of Wesley, as in the time of Moody – there must be a general sincere renunciation of every known sin.

No great revival ever began without that repentance and confession. Judgment must begin at the House of the Lord, with yourself and myself, dear fellow Christian. How can we expect sinners to get right if we ourselves who claim to be the children of God are not right?

A Tidal Wave of Agonizing Supplication

As Moses prayed at the Red Sea, as Joshua prayed before the walls of Jericho, as Elijah cried on Mt. Carmel, as Jesus wept in Gethsemane, as Paul and Silas lifted their voices in supplication in Philippi, we, too, must take hold of the horns of the Altar of Grace and pour out the tidal wave of agonizing supplication and intercession that will constrain God to do His mighty works on our behalf.

Oh, brethren, oh, sisters, we must pray! We must pray alone; we must pray in groups; we must come to the prayer meetings; we must pray in the secrecy of our own closets! We must pray for ourselves. We must agonize for each other. We must intercede for our Christian leaders and workers. We must baptize our communities, our cities, our nation, this world – in an ocean of intercessory tears as we plead the promises of God and the blood of Jesus Christ for the salvation of a lost world rushing to hell. We must pray down a revival!

A congregation can do it: "If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land" (2 Chr. 7:14).

Two Christians can do it: "If two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of My Father which is in heaven" (Matt. 18:19).

One saint of God taking hold of the altar of grace and hanging on can pray through to victory: "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much" (Jas. 5:16).

Yes, the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much, but oh, what more can be done when all of us repent of our sins, rededicate ourselves to the Lord, and again, renew our prayer covenant with God and with each other. I tell you, we’d have a revival that would make the day of Pentecost fall into insignificance.

God give us the grace to pay the price of repentance, in dedication, in supplication – that Pentecost might be repeated in our life and in our time, in Jesus’ dear name. Amen.
