"What was God doing last night during the storm?" a little girl asked her father.

Then without waiting for him to reply, she answered her own question: "I know. God was making the morning!"

God is forever making mornings.

So it is with the storms of our lives. We must not judge the character of God by life’s tragedies. His love and wisdom and power can bring a shining result out of the adverse components of our experience.

Elizabeth Elliot seems to have had more than her share of problems and sorrows. When asked how she managed to make the many adjustments in her life, she replied that she was held by God’s sovereignty. I like her words:

"I think every experience of trial puts us to this test: ‘Do you trust God or don’t you?’

"...God reminds me of who He is, and that is the basis of my trust--who God is, and not what God does or what I understand of the situation. And if He is God, then He is sovereign, and He is in charge, and He loves me."

That says it beautifully. Faith rests in what God is. Faith is simply believing that God knows what He is doing. His will and His love are the same thing. The God whose love has been supremely revealed at Calvary can be trusted to make all things work together for good. (See Romans 8:28.)

That is a great truth to put to work in your life. We will not always understand what happens, or why. We will rest on our knowledge of the goodness of God, on the reliability of His character, on God Himself.

This may be darkness to the intellect, but it is sunshine to the heart and soul! I find deep satisfaction in this verse of Scripture:

"I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them" (Isaiah 42:16).

Just give Him time!
