Text Sermons : ~Other Speakers S-Z : Classic Christian Writings : Prayer—Revival’s Prelude By J. M. Butchart

Open as PDF

The outpouring of the Spirit of God among men comes in answer to earnest prayer by God’s people (Joel 1:13,14). Some may say that God has promised, so why need we rend our hearts, with fasting and weeping and mourning?

There is a good answer to that in the book of Daniel. Jeremiah had foretold that seventy years would be the length of the desolation of Jerusalem. Daniel came to know that the seventy years were up. He did not say that God had promised and he would trust Him to fulfill His promise, but he said, “I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes” (Dan. 9:2,3).

Read the prayer in Daniel 9:4-19. While he was praying, the archangel Gabriel (v.21) came to instruct and encourage him and probably to influence Cyrus the king to induce him to issue the decree to send the Jews back to rebuild Jerusalem.

Daniel 10:13 says: “But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me for twenty-one days.” Daniel held right on in prayer until God had to send another archangel, Michael, and together they defeated the devil and prevailed on Cyrus to issue the decree.

Readers, I beseech you to obey the Word of the Lord and “Ask ye of the Lord rain in the time of the latter rain” (Zech. 10:1). Let us wrestle for the mighty deluge of the latter rain with the resultant great harvest of souls. Satan would like to bring on a world conflict and destroy all with hellish bombs before they have the chance to be saved, as this final outpouring of the Holy Spirit will bring about.

Are we going to let Satan have his way? God forbid! Take courage and pray for the mighty torrential downpours of the Holy Spirit promised us in these last days.
