We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out (1 Tim. 6:7).
Says missionary Elwyn Davies: In spite of the old saying, no one is really born with a silver spoon in his mouth. People are just born. The children of the wealthy and of the poor are just born. However much or little may be bestowed on them afterwards, when they enter the great stream of humanity they bring nothing with them.
Human experience confirms this. It takes a Divine revelation to add: It is certain we can carry nothing out. Pagans have usually assumed they can. When one of their number dies, many still try to send him on his way with food and weapons.
The way Christians accumulate material things seems to indicate that they, too, half hope to take some of it with them. But the Bible says: It is certain
nothing
While many works of God suffer lack, Christians are busy building bigger barns. If God calls tonight, whose shall your things be?
What if our Lord Jesus comes tonight? Who do you think will lay hold of your things? It will not be a Christianno Christian will be left.
How urgent then that we consider our stewardship! By giving all we can today, we leave that much less in danger of being lost.
How Much?
Out of this life I shall never take
Things of silver and gold I make.
All that I cherish and hoard away,
After I leave, on this earth must stay
Though I call it mine and boast its worth,
I must give it up, when I leave this earth.
All that I gather, all that I keep,
I must give it up when I fall asleep.
And I often wonder, what I shall own,
In that other life when I pass alone:
Will the Great Judge say when the task is through,
That my spirit has gathered some riches too?
Or shall at last it be mine to find,
All that I worked for, is left behind!
